JAMESTOWN, ND – The community of Jamestown is mourning the sudden and heartbreaking loss of Rita Kubat, a 67-year-old woman whose life was tragically cut short in a rollover accident on Saturday, July 26, 2025, in Stink Lake, North Dakota.
According to a statement from the North Dakota Highway Patrol, law enforcement and emergency responders were dispatched to the scene following reports of a submerged vehicle in the waters of Stink Lake. Upon arrival, authorities discovered a 1999 Toyota Camry upside down in the lake. The preliminary investigation indicates that the vehicle had veered into the west ditch of 65th Avenue NE, also known as Old US Highway 281, before hitting large rocks and rolling over. The vehicle came to a rest on its roof, partially submerged in the lake.
Inside the vehicle, authorities found Rita Kubat, the sole occupant. Tragically, she was pronounced dead at the scene. The Highway Patrol has reported that no seatbelt was in use at the time of the crash, although it remains unclear if one had been used earlier in the drive. At this time, the full circumstances surrounding the crash are still under investigation.
