In Loving Memory of Major Don Newell, USAF (Retired),“A true American hero, a devoted patriot, and a joy to all who had the honor of knowing him.”

It is with heavy hearts and profound gratitude that we share the passing of Major Don Newell, USAF, Retired—a man whose courage, service, and warmth left an indelible mark on all who knew him. Major Newell took his final flight from this life just months after joining us on Mission 23 this past April. While we had only a short time together, the impact he left behind will remain forever etched in our memories.

Before we had the honor of escorting him on Honor Flight, Major Newell had already dedicated 21 remarkable years of his life in service to our nation, amassing over 4,000 flying hours. A combat veteran of the Vietnam War, he served with unmatched distinction, flying F-4 Phantom jets, operating and maintaining T-37s and T-38s, and instructing new generations of pilots as a T-37 instructor and front-seat pilot. His dedication to duty was recognized through the prestigious Air Medal with 12 Oak Leaf Clusters, a testament to his valor, skill, and countless acts of service under fire.

Among his many assignments, Major Newell also had the unique honor of serving as Top Cover for the legendary Bob Hope Show, providing protection for performances that lifted the spirits of countless service members in the field. His military service was not only marked by bravery but also by a deep sense of responsibility and a quiet humility that spoke volumes about his character.

When he flew with us on Honor Flight Mission 23, Major Newell brought with him a presence that was both calming and uplifting. His infectious smile and unforgettable laugh were immediately felt by everyone around him. His Team Leader recalls that spark vividly—a man who had seen so much, done so much, and still radiated a childlike wonder and pride in being honored for his service. At orientation, the joy and connection between him and his beloved wife moved us all. Their excitement, their bond, their mutual pride—it was a living, breathing reminder of the love that sustains our heroes long after the battlefield.

To those of us who were privileged to meet him, Major Newell wasn’t just a decorated veteran—he was a friend, a mentor, a gentle soul whose stories carried the weight of history and the warmth of wisdom. His kindness, humility, and joy reflected the very best of what it means to serve.

We extend our deepest condolences to his beloved wife, family, and all who mourn his loss. Thank you for sharing him with us, even briefly. It was an honor we will not forget.

To Major Newell:

Thank you for your service. Thank you for your laughter. Thank you for the legacy you leave behind—not only in your military accomplishments but in the hearts of those you touched. Your mission is complete, your duty fulfilled, and your memory will fly on with us always.

Blue skies and tailwinds, Sir. Rest well.

With gratitude,
