SPRINGFIELD, OR – The Springfield Police Department is providing an update on the officer-involved shooting that occurred on Wednesday, July 30th, 2025, at approximately 2:37 PM in the 3300 block of Gateway Street. This incident, which involved an armed suspect and resulted in serious injuries to two officers, remains under active investigation.
We are pleased to share that both Springfield Police officers who were stabbed during the encounter have been released from the hospital and are now recovering at home. While their names are being withheld to protect their privacy during this difficult time, the department expresses sincere gratitude for the overwhelming support from the community, including well-wishes, cards, and acts of kindness extended to the officers and their families.
The Springfield Police officer who discharged their firearm during the incident has been placed on Critical Incident Leave, which is standard departmental protocol in officer-involved shootings. This administrative leave is not disciplinary but rather ensures the integrity of the ongoing investigation while also providing officers involved with necessary time to process the traumatic event.
In compliance with Senate Bill 111, passed by the 2007 Oregon Legislative Session, the Lane County Interagency Deadly Force Investigation Team (IDFIT) has assumed the primary investigative role. This response is in accordance with the Lane County District Attorney’s Office Deadly Force Plan, which was developed to provide a transparent, thorough, and impartial investigation when deadly force is used by law enforcement.
The Lane County Deadly Force Plan outlines protocols designed to:
- Ensure a consistent and unbiased investigation of deadly force incidents;
- Maintain public trust in the criminal justice process;
- Treat the involved officer(s) fairly and equitably;
- Preserve critical evidence and maintain investigative integrity.
Following the completion of IDFIT’s investigation, all findings will be submitted to the Lane County District Attorney, who will conduct an independent review. This review will determine whether the use of deadly physical force was legally justified based on the totality of evidence and circumstances.
Until the IDFIT investigation and District Attorney’s review are fully concluded, the Springfield Police Department will not be releasing further details about the incident, including names or additional specifics, in order to preserve the integrity of the investigative process.
We recognize that incidents involving the use of deadly force can be unsettling for both the community and law enforcement personnel. We remain committed to full transparency and accountability and will provide further updates as soon as they are available and appropriate under the legal framework.
