In Loving Memory of Christopher R. Brown (1984–2025): Devoted Friend, Hardworking Craftsman, and Beloved Member of the St. Marys Community

It is with profound sadness that the family, friends, and community of St. Marys mourn the tragic loss of Christopher R. Brown, 41, who lost his life on Thursday, July 31, 2025, in a building collapse that occurred on Spring Street in downtown St. Marys, Ohio.

The Auglaize County Coroner’s Office confirmed Christopher as the individual who perished in the collapse. The incident took place just after 10:30 a.m. and drew an immediate and extensive emergency response from local fire crews and specialized rescue teams. Christopher was trapped beneath the debris for several hours as firefighters and structural engineers worked against hazardous conditions to locate and retrieve his remains, which were recovered around 4:12 p.m.

A second individual was also inside the building at the time of the collapse and was successfully rescued and transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The extent of his injuries has not been publicly disclosed.

According to St. Marys Fire Chief Doug Ayers, the building involved in the collapse was one of the oldest structures in the city, and concerns about its stability had been previously documented. Reports indicate that the first floor had begun to sag, prompting the building’s owner to initiate makeshift reinforcement efforts before professional repairs were scheduled. Christopher and another friend — both close to the owner — had volunteered to assist with stabilizing the structure.

Ayers confirmed that the tattoo parlor previously operating in the building had already vacated due to noticeable wall bowing and uneven floors. The owner of the building, Todd Klosterman, stated in an interview that the men were attempting to prepare the space for upcoming structural work and were not operating in any official capacity. OSHA is now actively investigating the circumstances that led to the collapse, including whether safety protocols were followed or overlooked.

Though Christopher’s life was tragically cut short, those who knew him remember a man who was deeply loyal, selfless, and hardworking. Known for his infectious laugh, quiet strength, and willingness to lend a hand, Christopher was a pillar of support to his friends, a devoted family man, and someone who never hesitated to step up when needed. His death is not only a personal loss to his loved ones but also a tremendous blow to the St. Marys community that he helped build—literally and figuratively.

Friends describe him as someone who took pride in his work, respected the value of craftsmanship, and approached every task with diligence and care. He was the kind of man who showed up early, stayed late, and gave more than he took.

Christopher is survived by family members and a wide circle of friends who will miss his steady presence and kind heart. His memory will live on in the lives he touched, the hands he helped, and the community he served with quiet humility.

Plans for a public memorial service are currently underway and will be announced in the coming days. The Brown family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the first responders, rescue teams, and community members who have shown support, compassion, and solidarity during this unimaginably difficult time.

As the investigation continues, the hope remains that lessons from this tragic event can inspire safer working conditions, stricter oversight, and greater awareness regarding aging structures in small communities.

Rest in peace, Christopher R. Brown.

Your life was a gift, your loss is a tragedy, and your legacy is one of love, labor, and loyalty.
