After nearly six years of tireless investigation, the Tulsa Police Department has announced a major breakthrough in the 2019 homicide of Benjamin Montgomery. On July 23, 2025, authorities officially charged Jerrell Jones with First Degree Felony Murder, marking a pivotal development in a case that has haunted both law enforcement and the community since that tragic night.
The Night of the Crime
The incident occurred on the evening of October 10, 2019, when Tulsa police officers responded to reports of a shooting at an apartment complex near 101st Street and Sheridan Road. When first responders arrived, they found Benjamin Montgomery suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was immediately transported to a local hospital, but tragically succumbed to his injuries shortly thereafter.
Initial investigations revealed that two armed male suspects were attempting to rob an individual known to be involved in narcotics activity. Their target was reportedly a drug dealer who lived in the complex. The suspects coerced the dealer into leading them upstairs, but in a critical mistake, they entered the wrong apartment—the unit next door.
Inside that apartment was Ben Montgomery, a young man who was spending the evening with several friends. In a brave and selfless act, Ben tackled one of the armed suspects in an attempt to protect his friends and defend his home. During the struggle, he was shot at close range, and the suspects fled the scene immediately after.
Years of Determined Police Work
For years, Tulsa detectives pursued the case relentlessly, combing through witness statements, forensic evidence, and leads that often ran cold. Though progress was slow, the investigators never gave up hope. The Montgomery family, too, remained steadfast in their pursuit of justice.
A major breakthrough came in early July 2025, when a witness came forward with new and credible information identifying Jerrell Jones as one of the suspects involved in the failed robbery and fatal shooting.
Following this lead, detectives worked swiftly to corroborate the information. On July 23, 2025, a warrant was issued for Jerrell Jones’ arrest on charges of First Degree Felony Murder. Just days later, Jones was located and arrested in the state of Arkansas with the cooperation of local authorities. He has since been extradited to Oklahoma and booked into the Tulsa County Jail, where his bond has been set at $1.5 million.
A Call for Continued Community Support
Though the arrest of Jerrell Jones marks a major milestone in the investigation, Tulsa police emphasize that the case remains active and ongoing. Detectives believe there may be additional individuals with knowledge of the crime or potentially even other suspects involved.
Authorities are now urging anyone with further information to step forward. Tips can be submitted anonymously to Tulsa Crime Stoppers at 918-596-COPS. Rewards are offered for information leading to arrests, and confidentiality is guaranteed.
Honoring Ben Montgomery
Benjamin Montgomery’s life was cut short in a senseless act of violence. Those who knew him remember a young man full of kindness, courage, and loyalty. His heroic decision to confront an armed intruder to protect his friends is a testament to the kind of person he was—a protector, even in the face of danger.
This arrest brings some measure of closure to a family and community that has waited nearly six years for justice. But the case also serves as a sobering reminder of how violence can ripple across time, communities, and families. The Tulsa Police Department remains committed to seeing this case through and holding all responsible parties accountable.
Anyone with knowledge of this case or related activities is encouraged to help bring full justice for Benjamin Montgomery and his loved ones.
