ARREST MADE IN HOMICIDE CASE — Birmingham Police Department Acts Swiftly to Apprehend Suspects

The Birmingham Police Department is actively investigating a homicide that occurred late Thursday, July 31, 2025. The tragic incident resulted in the death of a young man, identified by the Jefferson County Coroner’s Office as Lorenzo Davis Jr., a 17-year-old Black male from Birmingham, Alabama.

At approximately 11:30 p.m., officers from the North Precinct were dispatched to the 2900 block of 29th Avenue North following reports of a person shot. Upon arrival, emergency responders found Lorenzo Davis Jr. suffering from gunshot wounds. Despite immediate efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.

Through ongoing investigations, two suspects have been identified in connection with this homicide:

  • Edjuan Figguers, 21, of Birmingham, Alabama
  • Deleon Hawkins, 22, of Birmingham, Alabama

On August 1, 2025, Birmingham Police Homicide Detectives presented the case before the Jefferson County District Attorney’s Office. Subsequently, warrants for Capital Murder were issued for both Figguers and Hawkins.

In a coordinated and swift operation, the Birmingham Police Department’s Special Operations Bureau led the arrest efforts, demonstrating exemplary teamwork and precision. The operation featured seamless collaboration between the Crime Reduction Team (CRT) and the Tactical (TACT) Unit, ensuring a coordinated approach to apprehending the suspects.

Police Chief Michael Pickett was personally involved in overseeing the arrests, with critical support from the Real Time Crime Center, which played an essential role in monitoring and tracking the suspects as they moved across different locations.

  • Edjuan Figguers was apprehended in the 900 block of 9th Street Southwest.
  • Deleon Hawkins was arrested in the 300 block of 2nd Street West.

Both suspects were taken into custody without incident and are currently held at the Jefferson County Jail, where they are being detained without bond.

Chief Pickett emphasized the department’s commitment to swift justice, stating,

“This is another example of what happens when strategy, urgency, and accountability meet in real time. We are committed to moving quickly, working smart, and showing this city that violence will not go unanswered.”
