ROANOKE, Va. — A tragic chapter deepens for a Roanoke family already devastated by gun violence. The victim fatally shot on Saturday in the 200 block of 12th Street SW has been identified as 43-year-old Isaac “Ike” Lamonte Cunningham, the father of a teen who was also shot and killed in the city just last year.
Roanoke Police say they responded to a report of a shooting shortly before 6 p.m. Upon arriving at the scene, officers found a man — later identified as Cunningham — suffering from gunshot wounds outside of a vehicle. Emergency responders rendered aid, but he was pronounced dead at the scene.
The area remained blocked off for hours as detectives canvassed the neighborhood and marked evidence. The sound of gunshots was reported by multiple neighbors, many of whom expressed sadness and frustration over yet another fatal act of violence in their community.
A Family Twice Devastated
Family members confirmed Sunday that the victim was Isaac “Ike” Cunningham, a father still grieving the death of his son, 15-year-old Isaac Cunningham Jr., who was shot and killed in June 2024.
The younger Cunningham’s death sparked community outrage and calls for increased youth protection in Roanoke. Now, just over a year later, his father’s life has also been claimed by gun violence, leaving loved ones shattered once again.
“This is beyond heartbreaking,” a relative shared in a statement. “To lose both of them within a year to the same kind of violence… it’s something no family should ever have to endure.”
Investigation Ongoing
Roanoke Police have not yet released any information regarding suspects or possible motives. As of Sunday evening, no arrests had been made. Investigators say they are reviewing surveillance footage from the area and interviewing witnesses in hopes of piecing together what led to the fatal shooting.
Authorities are urging anyone with information to come forward. Tips can be submitted to the Roanoke Police Department at (540) 344-8500, and anonymous tips may be submitted via the Roanoke Valley Crime Line.
Community Reacts
The shooting has reignited concern over gun violence in Roanoke, particularly as it continues to affect families already impacted by previous tragedies. Several community leaders and anti-violence advocates took to social media to express sorrow over Cunningham’s death, calling it a cruel reminder of the city’s urgent need for intervention, healing, and justice.
“Ike never stopped seeking answers about his son’s death,” said a local advocate who worked with the family after last year’s tragedy. “He wanted peace. He wanted change. Now we mourn him too.”
A Life Remembered
Isaac “Ike” Cunningham was known by many in his community as a father, friend, and a man trying to rebuild after immense loss. Those who knew him say he carried his grief with quiet strength and never stopped speaking out about the pain of losing a child.
Now, his own death has added to the ongoing tragedy felt by his family and community.
As the investigation continues, loved ones are preparing to lay a second family member to rest — another life cut short by violence.
