VERMILION, OH — Community Reeling After Fatal Domestic Violence Shooting Claims Life of Ashlee Summer McPeak

August 4, 2025 — The quiet city of Vermilion is still reeling from the tragic loss of 34-year-old Ashlee Summer McPeak, who was fatally shot on July 10 in what authorities have identified as a domestic violence incident. New details have emerged as the legal process against the accused suspect, 35-year-old Bryan J. Hall, continues to unfold.

Officers with the Vermilion Police Department responded swiftly to a distress call at a residence in the 500 block of Ferndale Avenue. Upon arrival, they found McPeak suffering from a fatal gunshot wound. Hall, who was reportedly still on the scene when police arrived, was immediately taken into custody and later charged with aggravated murder.

Hall was arraigned in Vermilion Municipal Court and remains incarcerated at Lorain County Jail under a $1 million bond. The case has since been transferred to the Lorain County grand jury for further review, though as of late Friday, a formal indictment had not yet been posted in the county docket.

The violent and deeply personal nature of the incident has shaken residents, especially after officials confirmed that McPeak’s young daughter was present during the tragedy. In an effort to provide a calm, compassionate environment during such a traumatic time, the girl was taken to Vermilion Fire Station No. 1, rather than the police station. There, she was cared for by firefighters and paramedics until family members from Tennessee could arrive to take her home.

Mayor Jim Forthofer publicly acknowledged the first responders’ compassion and attentiveness during the crisis, commending their efforts to prioritize the emotional well-being of the child amid such horrific circumstances. “This is not something any child should have to endure,” Forthofer said. “Our community’s first responders did everything they could to show care and humanity in a dark moment.”

Ashlee Summer McPeak, originally from Virginia, had planned to travel to Tennessee to visit family the day after the fatal shooting. Instead, her loved ones were left planning a funeral. A memorial service was held in Columbia, Tennessee, where her family resides. McPeak is remembered as a vibrant, loving mother and a woman who brought light to those around her.

In the weeks following her death, community members in Vermilion and beyond have expressed their sorrow and shared tributes to her memory, including heartfelt messages posted to GunMemorial.org, a national online remembrance site for victims of gun violence. Many have called for greater awareness and prevention efforts surrounding domestic violence, urging friends, neighbors, and community organizations to be proactive in identifying and addressing signs of abuse.

Friends of McPeak have described her as “resilient, kind-hearted, and endlessly devoted to her daughter.” One tribute read: “Ashlee didn’t deserve this. She deserved safety, love, and peace. We will never forget her.”

As the legal proceedings against Bryan J. Hall move forward, the Lorain County grand jury will determine whether to formally indict him on the charge of aggravated murder and potentially additional charges. If indicted, Hall would face prosecution in Lorain County Common Pleas Court.

The Vermilion Police Department and local advocacy groups are encouraging anyone experiencing domestic violence or who knows someone in danger to seek help. Resources are available through the National Domestic Violence Hotline at 1-800-799-SAFE (7233), and local shelters and organizations are prepared to offer assistance.

This tragedy has left a lasting scar on the Vermilion community—one that has sparked mourning, reflection, and urgent conversations about protecting vulnerable individuals from domestic violence.

Ashlee Summer McPeak’s legacy lives on in her daughter, her family, and the community that now carries her memory forward.
