Chance McCowin Obituary: Remembering a Life Lost Too Soon in the Wake of North Omaha Tragedy

North Omaha, NE – It is with heavy hearts and profound sadness that we announce the passing of Chance McCowin, a 22-year-old whose life was tragically cut short in the early hours of Monday, August 4, 2025, during a senseless act of gun violence near the intersection of North 24th Street and Patrick Avenue in North Omaha. The incident, which took place during the city’s vibrant Native Omaha Days celebration, left two others injured and a community in mourning.

According to the Omaha Police Department, emergency crews arrived on the scene shortly after midnight to find multiple victims suffering from gunshot wounds following a confrontation. Chance McCowin, critically injured in the incident, received CPR while being transported to the hospital, but despite the valiant efforts of first responders and medical staff, he succumbed to his injuries. His death sent a wave of shock and sorrow throughout the city, especially among those who knew and loved him.

Two additional victims — Dontavis Montgomery, 32, and Tai’Jianea Henderson, 24 — sustained critical injuries in the shooting. Thankfully, both are currently reported to be in stable condition. The investigation remains active, with no suspects named at this time. Police continue to urge anyone with knowledge of the incident to contact Omaha Crime Stoppers at 402-444-STOP (7867).

Chance McCowin was more than a victim — he was a beloved son, friend, and member of the Omaha community. Friends and family describe him as kind-hearted, full of laughter, and a bright light in the lives of those who knew him. He was known for his infectious smile, his loyalty to those close to him, and his ability to uplift anyone having a rough day. Chance had dreams, ambitions, and the kind of presence that made others feel seen and heard. His passing leaves a hole that cannot be filled.

The loss is especially painful given the setting — Native Omaha Days, a cherished biennial cultural celebration of Black heritage, family reunions, and community pride. What was meant to be a weekend of unity and joy was disrupted by violence that has cast a dark shadow over the event and left loved ones mourning a young life taken far too soon.

Police Captain Ken Fox, addressing the public in the wake of the tragedy, urged families to prioritize safety and accountability. “If your loved ones are present in this area, please advise them to return home. Ensure that your loved ones are safely at home,” he stated.

As law enforcement continues to search for answers, the community has begun to come together to remember Chance — through candlelight vigils, social media tributes, and heartfelt messages shared by those he touched in his brief yet impactful life. The McCowin family has expressed their gratitude for the outpouring of support and asks for continued prayers during this time of unimaginable grief.

A memorial and funeral service will be announced in the coming days. Loved ones are also working to establish a GoFundMe campaign to assist the family with funeral expenses and support in the wake of this tragedy.

Chance’s memory will live on in the hearts of those who knew him — through the stories they tell, the laughter they remember, and the legacy of love and light he leaves behind.

May Chance McCowin rest in eternal peace, and may justice be served swiftly for all those affected by this heartbreaking act of violence.
