With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, Sheriff Dance and the entire Sheriff’s Office announce the passing of a cherished colleague, friend, and public servant — Detention Officer Tim Hines, who passed away yesterday afternoon at the age of 60.
Officer Hines served with unwavering commitment and integrity for over 21 years, becoming not only an essential part of the Sheriff’s Office operations but also a respected mentor and a beloved friend to many. Throughout his distinguished tenure, Officer Hines held the vital role of designated kitchen officer, ensuring the safety, efficiency, and dignity of the daily operations within the detention center’s food services. Though his duties were often behind the scenes, his impact was felt by everyone who walked through those walls.
Known for his humble spirit, quiet strength, and deep compassion, Officer Hines was much more than a colleague—he was a cornerstone of the department. His kind words, steady presence, and unwavering dedication to his duties made him a trusted figure among staff and inmates alike. His work ethic set the tone for professionalism in the workplace, and his moral compass never wavered, regardless of the challenges faced.
More than his job title, Tim was a gentle soul, someone who always showed up—on time, with purpose, and with a heart for service. He was the type of man who remembered birthdays, helped younger officers learn the ropes, and went out of his way to lend a hand or share a kind word. His ability to listen, his words of encouragement, and his genuine care for others left lasting impressions that will echo throughout the Sheriff’s Office long after his passing.
As we grieve this incredible loss, we also take time to celebrate the life and legacy of Officer Hines. His years of service are marked not only by the tasks he completed but by the countless lives he touched with his warmth, fairness, and enduring humanity. The quiet strength with which he carried out his duties helped define the very culture and heart of our department.
Officer Hines is survived by his beloved wife, extended family, and many close friends and coworkers who are now left with a void that cannot be filled. We extend our deepest sympathies to all who loved him. We also ask the community to keep his wife, family, and the Sheriff’s Office staff in your thoughts and prayers during this deeply painful time.
Sheriff Dance offered the following statement:
“Officer Tim Hines was the very best of us — a model of professionalism, compassion, and quiet leadership. He was deeply respected, and his absence will be felt every single day. We are all better for having known him, and we will honor his memory by continuing the work he loved with the same dignity and care he demonstrated every day.”
Funeral arrangements and memorial services will be announced in the coming days. In the meantime, grief counseling and support services will be available to all staff and officers as we come together to support one another during this time of mourning.
Rest in peace, Officer Tim Hines.
Your service, your kindness, and your legacy will never be forgotten.
