Vermilion, OH (August 5, 2025) — Authorities in Vermilion have confirmed the arrest of 18-year-old Jacob Bray of Sheffield Lake in connection to a series of shooting incidents that occurred on July 23, 2025. The arrest marks a significant development in the ongoing investigation into gunfire that rattled local neighborhoods and prompted increased police presence last month.
According to the Vermilion Police Department (VPD), Bray turned himself in to detectives earlier today with his attorney present. The decision to surrender came following days of investigation and collaboration with the Lorain County Prosecutor’s Office, which ultimately resulted in the filing of five felony charges against the suspect.
Bray is now facing the following charges:
- Discharging a Firearm into a Habitation (F2)
- Discharging a Firearm at or Near a Prohibited Premises (F3)
- Two Counts of Improper Transport of a Firearm in a Motor Vehicle (F4)
- Improper Furnishing of a Firearm to a Minor (F5)
Police have not released details regarding the exact motive, but earlier reports indicated that multiple shots were fired during the July 23 incident, potentially endangering residents in the area. Thankfully, no injuries were reported, but investigators say the reckless discharge of a weapon into or near a dwelling posed a serious threat to public safety.
Bray was arraigned in Vermilion Municipal Court, and due to the nature of the charges, the case has been bound over to the Lorain County Grand Jury for further review. After the hearing, Bray was transported to the Lorain County Jail, where he is being held on a $50,000 bond.
Authorities also noted that charges are still pending for a juvenile suspect who was allegedly involved in the incident. Police have not disclosed the minor’s identity or role in the events, citing legal protections due to age.
The Vermilion Police Department has emphasized that the investigation remains active and ongoing. Detectives are continuing to gather evidence, conduct interviews, and work alongside the prosecutor’s office to ensure all responsible parties are held accountable.
Anyone with additional information related to the July 23 incident is urged to contact Vermilion Police Detectives or submit tips anonymously through Crime Stoppers.
