CHILTON COUNTY, Ala. — A deadly confrontation in rural Chilton County has left one man dead and another behind bars. Authorities say Kirby Jones, a resident of Maplesville, was fatally shot during an altercation on County Road 324.
Deputies with the Chilton County Sheriff’s Office responded to the scene following reports of a shooting. When they arrived, they found Kirby Jones suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. He was quickly transported to a nearby hospital, but despite efforts to save him, Jones was pronounced dead.
Investigators say the shooting occurred while Kirby Jones was visiting a friend. During the visit, a dispute broke out between Jones and the friend’s neighbor, Evan Romano. The disagreement escalated, and authorities allege that Romano retrieved a firearm and shot Jones.
Following an initial investigation, Evan Romano was arrested and charged with murder. He is currently being held at the Chilton County Jail as the case continues to be investigated.
Sheriff John Shearon confirmed that the investigation is still ongoing and urged anyone with additional information about the incident to contact law enforcement.
“This is a tragic situation,” the Sheriff’s Office said in a statement. “Our hearts go out to the family of Kirby Jones as they grieve this devastating loss.”
Community members who knew Kirby Jones described him as a respectful and kind individual. His sudden death has left many in shock as authorities work to piece together the circumstances that led to the fatal encounter.
