LOYAL, Wis. — A tragic crash involving a horse-drawn buggy and a van claimed the life of one adult passenger and seriously injured a 12-year-old child on Saturday afternoon, August 9, 2025, in the Town of Loyal.
The Clark County Sheriff’s Office received a 911 call at approximately 2:51 p.m. reporting the collision on County Trunk Highway K (CTH K), just north of Spencer Road. Preliminary investigation indicates that the horse-drawn buggy was traveling northbound on CTH K when it was struck from behind by a northbound van. Both vehicles ultimately came to rest in the east ditch alongside the road.
The buggy was occupied by two passengers at the time of the crash. Sadly, the adult passenger was pronounced deceased at the scene due to the severity of injuries sustained. The second passenger, a 12-year-old child, was transported by emergency personnel to Marshfield Medical Center with serious injuries and is currently receiving treatment.
The van was occupied by a single individual who reportedly escaped the crash unharmed.
Multiple emergency agencies responded promptly to the scene, including the Loyal Area Fire and Ambulance Service, Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Wisconsin State Patrol, Marshfield Fire Ambulance Service, and the Clark County Coroner’s Office.
An active investigation into the cause and circumstances of the crash is being conducted jointly by the Clark County Sheriff’s Office, Clark County Coroner’s Office, and the Wisconsin State Patrol.
At this time, authorities have not released the names of the individuals involved as the investigation is ongoing and family notifications are being made.
Chief Deputy James Hirsch of the Clark County Sheriff’s Office issued a statement acknowledging the gravity of the incident:
“This is a tragic event for all involved and the community. Our thoughts are with the family and friends affected by this loss. We thank the multiple agencies who worked together at the scene and throughout this investigation.”
Officials are urging anyone who may have witnessed the collision or who has relevant information to contact the Clark County Sheriff’s Office.
