According to a news release from the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the fatal incident occurred just before noon along the northbound lanes of I-71 near milepost 206. Tracy was a passenger in a Ford F250 pickup truck towing a fifth-wheel trailer, traveling northbound with the driver, a 41-year-old man from Painesville.
The chain of events unfolded when a Chrysler 200 sedan, reportedly traveling at a high rate of speed, sideswiped the pickup truck. The force of the impact caused the truck to overturn violently. The pickup truck subsequently detached from the trailer and careened over a bridge overpass, tumbling down an embankment onto railroad tracks below. Upon impact, the vehicle ignited, becoming engulfed in flames.
In the chaos of the crash, debris struck a Honda Odyssey minivan also traveling northbound on the interstate. The severity of the crash led to Tracy Hodgkinson being ejected from the pickup truck. Emergency responders airlifted her to a hospital in Akron, where she succumbed to her injuries despite intensive medical care.
The driver of the pickup truck suffered serious but non-life-threatening injuries and was also hospitalized in Akron. The young driver of the Chrysler sedan, a 19-year-old from Akron, escaped the crash without injury.
