It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of Janice Paskey on August 9, 2025, at the age of 62 in Calgary, Alberta. Janice was a beloved mother, wife, daughter, sister, and friend whose life was marked by unwavering dedication to her family, friends, and the communities she cherished.
Born on November 8, 1962, in St. Catharines, Ontario, to Arlene and Peter Paskey, Janice’s journey was one defined by passion, intellect, and a deep commitment to making a difference. After graduating from Carleton University with a Bachelor of Arts in Journalism, she embarked on a vibrant career in media. Throughout the 1990s, Janice served as editor of the McGill News Alumni Magazine in Montreal, where her editorial insight and leadership quickly gained recognition.
In 1998, Janice moved with her family to Calgary, where she continued her impactful work as the editor of Avenue Magazine. However, it was in education that she truly found her calling. For 17 years, Janice was a cherished member of the journalism faculty at Mount Royal University, where she inspired and mentored countless aspiring journalists. Her dedication to teaching, editing, and organizing was instrumental in shaping the future of Canadian journalism. Her colleagues and students remember her as a passionate educator with a keen intellect, sharp wit, and a nurturing spirit.
Beyond her professional life, Janice was a tireless volunteer who generously offered her time and energy to numerous causes close to her heart. Her commitment to service and advocacy reflected the integrity and compassion that defined her character. Friends and associates recall her fierce loyalty, strength in the face of challenges, and an intuition that guided her decisions with remarkable clarity.
Janice leaves behind her husband, Marc Coyte; sons Adam and Matthew Paskey-Coyte (and his partner Daphnée Chouinard); her sister, Gail Paskey; cousin Cindy Paskey; and her mother, Arlene (Legros) Paskey. She was preceded in death by her father, Peter Paskey. Those who loved her will forever cherish her toughness, kindness, and the profound love she shared with those closest to her.
The family extends their heartfelt gratitude to the doctors, surgeons, nurses, and healthcare workers in Calgary and Edmonton whose tireless efforts ensured Janice received the best care during her illness.
A simple Catholic Funeral Service to honor Janice’s life will be held on Saturday, August 16, 2025, at 2:00 p.m. at Foster’s Garden Chapel, located at 3220 – 4 Street N.W., Calgary, Alberta, directly across from Queen’s Park Cemetery.
