Fatal Crash in Pike County Claims Life of Piketon Man

Seal Township, OH – The community of Piketon is mourning the loss of John R. Short, 54, following a tragic single-vehicle accident in Seal Township on Monday evening, August 11, 2025.

According to the Portsmouth Post of the Ohio State Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 7:53 p.m. on Schuster Road near Taylor Hollow Road. Authorities reported that a maroon 1998 Ford F-150, driven by Short, was traveling westbound on Schuster Road when it veered off the right side of the roadway.

Investigators say Short overcorrected, causing the vehicle to travel off the left side of the road, where it struck a ditch and a fence before overturning. During the rollover, Short was ejected from the vehicle. Despite the rapid response of emergency personnel, he succumbed to his injuries at the scene.

The Ohio State Highway Patrol was assisted by the Seal Township Fire Department, Portsmouth Ambulance, and the Pike County Sheriff’s Department.

Authorities have not released further details on what may have led to the crash, but they continue to investigate the circumstances surrounding the incident.

This tragic accident serves as a somber reminder of the dangers of rural road travel, where narrow lanes, sharp curves, and uneven shoulders can make recovery from roadway departures difficult.

John R. Short’s passing has left family, friends, and neighbors in deep grief. Those who knew him describe him as a hardworking and friendly member of the community, always willing to lend a helping hand. Funeral arrangements are expected to be announced by his family in the coming days.
