KANKAKEE, IL – July 18, 2025 — A series of gunfire-related incidents unfolded across Kankakee between the evening of Thursday, July 17, and the early morning hours of Friday, July 18, leaving three people injured and prompting an arrest in a separate shooting. The Kankakee Police Department is actively investigating whether any of the incidents are connected and is urging the public to come forward with information.
Shooting at Apartment Complex – 450 S. Dearborn Avenue
At approximately 9:45 p.m. on July 17, officers were dispatched to an apartment building at 450 S. Dearborn Avenue following multiple reports of shots fired. Upon arrival, they discovered shell casings and a bullet hole in the glass entry door of the complex.
While securing the scene, officers were notified of a victim found in the 300 block of S. Indiana Avenue. The man, identified as a 25-year-old male, had sustained multiple gunshot wounds and was transported to a local hospital for treatment. His condition is currently stable.
Inside the apartment building, officers found two additional victims:
- An 18-year-old male who suffered a graze wound to the arm. He declined further medical treatment.
- A 19-year-old female, who had been shot in the arm. Responding officers quickly applied a tourniquet, and she was taken to the hospital for care.
The injuries sustained by all three victims are not believed to be life-threatening. Detectives processed the scene and conducted preliminary interviews with witnesses. The investigation remains ongoing.
ShotSpotter Alert – 700 Block of N. Rosewood Avenue
Earlier that evening, around 8:23 p.m., police responded to a ShotSpotter alert in the 700 block of N. Rosewood Avenue. Witnesses reported that shots were fired from a white utility van with no rear windows. The suspect behind the wheel was described as a male subject.
Additionally, a man wearing a blue sweater was seen fleeing the area on foot and may be linked to the shooting.
At this time, no victims have been located in connection with this incident. However, officers recovered multiple shell casings from the scene, and detectives are actively working to identify those involved.
Arrest Made Following ShotSpotter Alert – 300 Block of S. Evergreen Avenue
In a separate but significant development, officers responded to a ShotSpotter alert at 2:29 a.m. on July 18 in the 300 block of S. Evergreen Avenue.
While canvassing the area, officers spotted a suspect running near S. Myrtle Avenue and E. Hickory Street. He was quickly apprehended, and a firearm was recovered nearby.
The suspect was identified as Walter O. Green, age 35, of Kankakee. Green was transported to the Jerome Combs Detention Center and faces the following charges:
- Aggravated Discharge of a Firearm
- Unlawful Use of a Weapon (UUW)
- Possession of a Stolen Firearm
- No FOID Card
- No Concealed Carry License
It is currently unclear whether the shooting involving Walter Green is connected to the other incidents. The Kankakee Police Department continues to investigate all three events and is committed to identifying any links.
