Opelika, AL — Authorities in Lee County are actively investigating a dangerous and disturbing incident that occurred on the evening of June 29, 2025, in which an unidentified suspect fired a gunshot into an occupied residence in Opelika. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is now seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating the person or persons responsible.
At approximately 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to an emergency call in the 8000 block of Lee Road 390, where the homeowner reported that an unknown individual had approached the front door and attempted to force entry. According to the victim, the suspect was described as an older Black male wearing a red shirt who approached the home under suspicious circumstances.
Before the homeowner could fully react, the suspect allegedly fired a round from a handgun through the front door, striking the dwelling but fortunately causing no reported injuries to the occupants inside. After discharging the weapon, the suspect fled the scene in an older-model red SUV, believed to be a Chevrolet Blazer or a similar vehicle, which was reported to have been occupied by two to three additional individuals.
Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and immediately began collecting evidence, canvassing the area for witnesses, and reviewing nearby surveillance footage. However, the suspect and the vehicle involved have not yet been located, and no arrests have been made as of this time.
The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is urging community members to remain vigilant and report any sightings or tips that could lead to the identification of the suspect or the vehicle involved. Investigators believe that someone in the area may have seen or heard something that can help them move this case forward.
“This was a terrifying event for the family inside that home, and we are taking it extremely seriously,” said a representative from the Lee County Sheriff’s Office. “The fact that someone fired into a residence where people were present is alarming and completely unacceptable. We are doing everything we can to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible.”
Residents in the area are encouraged to review their home security footage from the evening of Sunday, June 29th, particularly around the 9:00–10:00 p.m. window, and to report anything suspicious. Even seemingly minor details can provide valuable leads for detectives.
