Opelika, AL — Authorities in Lee County are actively investigating a dangerous and disturbing incident that occurred on the evening of June 29, 2025, in which an unidentified suspect fired a gunshot into an occupied residence in Opelika. The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is now seeking the public’s assistance in identifying and locating the person or persons responsible.

At approximately 9:30 p.m., deputies responded to an emergency call in the 8000 block of Lee Road 390, where the homeowner reported that an unknown individual had approached the front door and attempted to force entry. According to the victim, the suspect was described as an older Black male wearing a red shirt who approached the home under suspicious circumstances.

Before the homeowner could fully react, the suspect allegedly fired a round from a handgun through the front door, striking the dwelling but fortunately causing no reported injuries to the occupants inside. After discharging the weapon, the suspect fled the scene in an older-model red SUV, believed to be a Chevrolet Blazer or a similar vehicle, which was reported to have been occupied by two to three additional individuals.

Law enforcement officials arrived at the scene shortly after the incident and immediately began collecting evidence, canvassing the area for witnesses, and reviewing nearby surveillance footage. However, the suspect and the vehicle involved have not yet been located, and no arrests have been made as of this time.

The Lee County Sheriff’s Office is urging community members to remain vigilant and report any sightings or tips that could lead to the identification of the suspect or the vehicle involved. Investigators believe that someone in the area may have seen or heard something that can help them move this case forward.

We are doing everything we can to identify and apprehend the individuals responsible.”

Residents in the area are encouraged to review their home security footage from the evening of Sunday, June 29th, particularly around the 9:00–10:00 p.m. window, and to report anything suspicious. Even seemingly minor details can provide valuable leads for detectives.

  • Former Missouri Middle School Teacher and Coach Sentenced to 30 Years in Federal Prison for Coercing and Sexually Abusing a Minor

Former Missouri Middle School Teacher and Coach Sentenced to 30 Years in Federal Prison for Coercing and Sexually Abusing a Minor

In a disturbing case that underscores the critical importance of vigilance and accountability in our schools, Ronald Dale Sanders, a 57-year-old former middle school teacher and coach from Belton, Missouri, has been sentenced to 360 months (30 years) in federal prison for coercing, enticing, and sexually abusing a minor child. The sentencing marks the end of a long and intensive investigation involving multiple law enforcement agencies and community partners across state lines.

Following his prison sentence, Sanders will be placed under lifetime supervised release and will be required to register as a sex offender for the remainder of his life.

The crimes committed by Sanders were federal in nature and deeply exploitative. According to court documents and the U.S. Attorney’s Office for the Northern District of Oklahoma, Sanders engaged in a calculated and predatory campaign to coerce and sexually abuse a minor over an extended period. The abuse not only shattered the innocence and safety of the victim but also left a lasting impact on the community that once trusted Sanders in a position of authority and influence over young students.

The investigation that led to Sanders’ arrest and conviction was the result of a joint effort by the FBI – Oklahoma City Division, the Miami (Oklahoma) Police Department, the Ottawa County Sheriff’s Office, and the Oklahoma Highway Patrol. Miami Public Schools also played a critical role in the investigation, providing support and cooperation throughout the case, which was essential in securing justice for the victim.

Law enforcement authorities uncovered that Sanders, while employed as a coach and educator, used his position to gain access to the victim and engage in manipulative behavior designed to groom and control. His actions constituted serious federal offenses, including coercion and enticement of a minor, violations that carry severe penalties due to the devastating harm they cause.

“This sentencing reflects the gravity of Ronald Sanders’ betrayal of trust and the permanent damage caused by his predatory behavior,” said U.S. Attorney Clinton J. Johnson. “We are grateful to the courageous victim who came forward and to the law enforcement agencies whose hard work brought Sanders to justice. The sentence ensures that he will not have the opportunity to harm another child again.”

The case serves as a stark reminder of the responsibility entrusted to educators and coaches and the devastating consequences when that trust is violated. Schools are meant to be safe spaces for learning and growth, and when individuals exploit that setting for personal gratification, it is a profound abuse of power.

The FBI and partnering agencies have reaffirmed their commitment to protecting children and holding predators accountable, no matter how long justice takes or how respected an individual may appear in their community.

Anyone with information about similar abuse or misconduct by Sanders—or any educator or individual in a position of authority—is urged to contact the FBI or local law enforcement. Victims of child exploitation or abuse can also reach out to the National Center for Missing & Exploited Children (NCMEC) at 1-800-THE-LOST (1-800-843-5678).

For further information on this case, including official court documents and sentencing details, visit the Department of Justice press release:

This case is a sobering but important example of how collaboration, survivor bravery, and strong legal action can protect children and uphold justice in even the most painful circumstances.

  • Remembering Pastor Paul Westbrook: Faithful Shepherd, Devoted Servant, and Beloved Friend

Remembering Pastor Paul Westbrook: Faithful Shepherd, Devoted Servant, and Beloved Friend

With profound sadness and hearts full of gratitude for his life, we honor the memory of Pastor Paul Westbrook, a faithful shepherd, devoted servant, and beloved friend whose passing leaves an immeasurable void in the hearts of his family, congregation, and the countless lives he touched.

Pastor Paul Westbrook was more than a leader—he was a light in the lives of many. A man of unwavering faith, humble strength, and compassionate spirit, he served not only as the spiritual shepherd of his church but also as a pillar of love and encouragement within his community. His passing marks the end of a deeply impactful earthly journey, but his legacy will endure in the lives, hearts, and stories of all who had the blessing of knowing him.

For decades, Pastor Paul poured his heart and soul into his calling. As the founding pastor of his congregation, he faithfully nurtured its growth from a small gathering of believers to a thriving community of faith, hope, and love. He preached the Gospel with clarity and conviction, counseled the brokenhearted with gentle wisdom, and extended his hands and heart to those in need—always embodying the teachings of Christ with grace and humility.

His sermons were not merely messages; they were moments of transformation. Through every word he spoke, every prayer he offered, and every act of kindness he showed, Pastor Paul reminded us that faith is not just spoken but lived. He had a unique gift for making everyone feel seen, heard, and loved—whether they were life-long members of his church or strangers seeking comfort in a difficult season.

Beyond the pulpit, Pastor Paul was a devoted husband, a loving father, a cherished grandfather, and a loyal friend. His family was his pride and joy, and he often shared stories of their love and laughter during his sermons. His eyes would light up when speaking about his wife’s unwavering support, his children’s accomplishments, or the sweet moments spent with his grandchildren. His home was a place of warmth, filled with faith, music, and the sound of his gentle laughter.

He also carried a deep burden for the hurting—visiting the sick in hospitals, comforting grieving families, mentoring young pastors, and advocating for justice and compassion in the public square. He didn’t just build a church; he built a legacy of love that extended far beyond the sanctuary walls.

The void left by Pastor Paul’s passing is vast. For his church, he was more than a pastor; he was a father figure, a counselor, and a constant source of encouragement. For his fellow clergy, he was a mentor and a friend—someone who led with both strength and tenderness, never seeking the spotlight, always pointing others to the Savior he served. For his community, he was a beacon of unity and compassion, a man who never hesitated to act when someone was in need.

And yet, while we mourn his absence, we celebrate the extraordinary life he lived and the eternal hope he held. Pastor Paul Westbrook ran his race well. He fought the good fight. And now, we find comfort in knowing that he has heard the words he longed to hear all his life: “Well done, good and faithful servant.”

In his honor, let us continue the work he began—loving without condition, serving without recognition, and walking faithfully in the steps of Christ. Though Pastor Paul is no longer with us in body, his legacy lives on in every life he touched, every soul he shepherded, and every heart he helped heal.

May his memory be a blessing, and may his life continue to inspire all of us to live with the same humility, courage, and faith that defined every day of his earthly ministry. Rest in peace, Pastor Paul Westbrook. You were deeply loved, and you will never be forgotten.
