PITTSBURGH, PA – The Pittsburgh sports community is mourning the devastating loss of Aaron “AJ” Beatty, a talented and respected former defensive end who made his mark both on and off the field. AJ, only 20 years old, passed away suddenly and tragically, leaving behind a legacy of athletic excellence, integrity, and inspiration that touched countless lives across the city and beyond.

Born and raised in Pittsburgh, AJ Beatty was a proud graduate of Central Catholic High School, where he rose to prominence as one of the most dynamic and driven football players in the region. Known for his strength, agility, and relentless work ethic, AJ quickly became a cornerstone of the Central Catholic Vikings’ defense, earning accolades and drawing attention from collegiate programs across the country.

He committed to the University of North Carolina, where he joined the Tar Heels football program as a promising young defensive end. Though injuries eventually impacted his collegiate playing career, AJ’s passion for the game never waned, and he remained a beloved figure among teammates, coaches, and fans for his positivity, leadership, and dedication to the sport.

AJ was more than just a football player. He was a role model, a teammate, a student, a brother, a son, and a friend. He carried himself with humility and grace, always lifting those around him with his infectious smile, sense of humor, and fierce loyalty. From his coaches to classmates, teammates to teachers, and the entire Pittsburgh football family, tributes have poured in celebrating his life and mourning the loss of a young man who had so much more to give.

“He was the kind of person you could count on,” said one of his former Central Catholic coaches. “He brought heart to everything he did. We lost not just a great player, but a truly exceptional young man.”

At Central Catholic, AJ stood out not only for his athletic achievements but for his leadership and mentorship. Younger players looked up to him, and he often took time to offer advice, encouragement, and support to those following in his footsteps. His presence in the locker room was as valuable as his presence on the field.

At UNC, even when sidelined by injury, AJ remained involved and supportive. He exemplified the spirit of the Tar Heels program, showing that leadership and resilience are not defined by playing time but by character.

AJ’s family has expressed deep gratitude for the overwhelming support and love they’ve received since the news of his passing broke. “Aaron was everything to us,” the Beatty family shared in a statement. “He was kind, courageous, determined, and loving. Our hearts are broken, but we are so proud of the man he became.”

A candlelight vigil is being planned in Pittsburgh to celebrate AJ’s life, with details to be announced in the coming days. Funeral and memorial service arrangements will be shared once finalized. In the meantime, friends, former teammates, and members of the community continue to gather, grieve, and honor the memory of a life taken far too soon.

Though he is no longer with us, Aaron “AJ” Beatty will forever be remembered as a warrior on the field, a leader in the locker room, and a gentle, loyal soul in the lives of all who knew him. His legacy will endure in the hearts of his community, his alma maters, and every young athlete who dreams big because AJ once showed them it was possible.

MPD Investigates Shooting Near Kennedy Recreation Center in Northwest D.C.

WASHINGTON, D.C. – The Metropolitan Police Department (MPD) is actively investigating a shooting that occurred near the Kennedy Recreation Center in the 1400 block of 7th Street Northwest—a densely populated and widely used public space in the Shaw neighborhood. The incident, which unfolded on Monday afternoon, has left residents shaken and reignited citywide concerns about the persistent threat of gun violence in areas meant to serve as safe havens for families and youth.

According to preliminary information released by MPD, the shooting involved an adult female who sustained gunshot wounds. Emergency personnel responded promptly, rendering aid at the scene before transporting the victim to a nearby trauma facility. Authorities confirmed that she was conscious and breathing at the time of transport, though her current condition remains undisclosed.

The shooting took place in close proximity to the Kennedy Recreation Center, a staple of the community that offers a wide range of recreational programs, youth sports leagues, educational workshops, and cultural events. The facility is surrounded by residential units, local businesses, and is frequently used by families and children throughout the week. That the shooting occurred in such a well-trafficked public space during daylight hours has added to the community’s growing unease.

Multiple witnesses reported hearing a series of gunshots, prompting an immediate and sizable law enforcement response. Officers quickly cordoned off sections of 7th Street NW, with crime scene tape stretching across sidewalks and intersections as investigators worked to secure and process the area. Detectives were seen canvassing for evidence and interviewing individuals in the vicinity, hoping to gather critical details or surveillance footage that could aid in identifying the person or persons responsible.

As of now, no arrests have been made and MPD has not released any suspect descriptions. Investigators are urging anyone with information to come forward, no matter how minor it may seem. Tips can be submitted anonymously by calling the department’s tip line at (202) 727-9099 or by texting 50411.

In a public statement, MPD officials reiterated their dedication to solving the case and protecting community spaces. “We take all acts of violence seriously, especially when they occur in areas that serve as vital gathering points for our residents,” one official stated. “We are pursuing all leads and remain committed to bringing those responsible to justice.”

The incident has stirred fear and frustration among nearby residents and regular visitors of the Kennedy Recreation Center.

“It’s heartbreaking,” said a mother of two who frequents the center for afterschool programs. “This is where my kids come to play and learn. We never expect violence to erupt so close to home, but here we are again.”

Community leaders, including city council members and nonprofit organizers, are calling for an urgent response to both the incident and the broader issue of gun violence. Discussions are reportedly underway between local officials and MPD leadership regarding potential enhancements to safety in the area, including increased patrols, security measures around the recreation center, and stronger community engagement strategies.

The Kennedy Recreation Center, while temporarily disrupted, remains a symbol of resilience for many in the neighborhood. Residents are determined not to allow fear to dismantle the fabric of their community.

“We can’t let this define us,” said one local resident. “But we also can’t ignore it. We need accountability. We need answers. And most of all, we need to know that our public spaces are safe.”

As the investigation continues, MPD is expected to release further updates. In the meantime, the community remains vigilant, united in grief, and hopeful for justice and healing in the days ahead.

  • In Loving Memory of Chase Childers: A Hero, Husband, Father, and Friend

In Loving Memory of Chase Childers: A Hero, Husband, Father, and Friend

With shattered hearts and unimaginable grief, we share the tragic and heroic passing of Chase Childers, a man whose life was defined by strength, love, courage, and an unwavering devotion to others. Chase died on Sunday afternoon in Pawleys Island, South Carolina, after performing a selfless act of bravery—saving a family of five from a dangerous rip current, sacrificing his own life to ensure theirs.

This loss feels surreal, painfully unjust, and nearly impossible to grasp. Chase was not only admired for the things he accomplished in his life, but more deeply loved for the person he was.

A Life of Many Talents and Greater Purpose

Chase Childers was a man of remarkable versatility and quiet brilliance. A former professional baseball player with the Baltimore Orioles, he lived out one of his earliest dreams on the field. He later dedicated himself to serving and protecting others as a Cobb County police officer, where his courage and leadership earned him a lifetime achievement award for saving multiple lives throughout his career.

But his talents didn’t stop there. Chase was also an avid fisherman, a craftsman, and a builder whose hands could bring any vision to life. He had a natural ability to fix, create, and construct—just another way he gave of himself to those he loved.

Yet what truly set Chase apart was not what he could do, but who he was.

A Husband, Father, Son, and Friend Beyond Measure

At the core of Chase’s being was his family—his everything. He was the devoted and deeply loving husband of Nataley Childers, his soulmate and best friend since their teenage years. The love they shared was evident to all who knew them: a partnership filled with laughter, loyalty, and quiet moments that spoke volumes.

He was the incredible father of three beautiful children, whose lives were shaped by his compassion, wisdom, and playful spirit. His children looked up to him not just as a parent, but as a protector, teacher, and hero long before the world came to know him as such.

He was also a beloved son, a loyal brother, and a treasured friend to many—someone you could always count on, whether in a moment of joy or crisis. His presence brought calm. His kindness left lasting impressions. His integrity inspired those around him.

    The Ultimate Sacrifice

On that fateful Sunday at Pawleys Island, Chase witnessed a family of five in danger, caught in the powerful pull of a rip current. Without hesitation, he leapt into action, placing their lives above his own. He successfully brought them to safety—an act of valor that saved a mother, a father, and their children.

But the ocean’s grip was relentless. After giving everything he had, Chase was unable to escape the pull of the tide. He was swept away in front of his wife and children, the very people who knew his heart and heroism best.

He died as he lived—serving others, with courage, love, and honor.

A Community in Mourning and in Gratitude

The community, friends, and countless strangers have rallied in support of Nataley and their children, mourning with them and standing with them in their unimaginable pain. Words cannot truly capture the heartbreak or the depth of Chase’s impact on those who knew and loved him.

His story has moved hearts across the country, not only for the tragedy of his death but for the bravery that defined it. He is—and always will be—a hero.

“Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends.” — John 15:13

  • Remembering Andrea Gibson (1975–2025): A Fierce Voice for Love, Identity, and Humanity

Remembering Andrea Gibson (1975–2025): A Fierce Voice for Love, Identity, and Humanity

The world of poetry and performance has lost one of its most luminous voices. Andrea Gibson, the celebrated queer spoken word poet and activist, passed away on July 14, 2025, surrounded by an intimate circle of loved ones at their home. They were 49 years old.

In a farewell that reflects the deeply human and heartfelt way they lived, Andrea was surrounded by their wife, Meg, four ex-girlfriends, their mother and father, dozens of friends, and their three beloved dogs—a scene that speaks to the magnitude of love, acceptance, and chosen family that defined Andrea’s life.

Born in Calais, Maine, Andrea rose to national acclaim in the early 2000s as one of the first openly genderqueer poets to break through in the spoken word scene. Their work, marked by raw honesty, disarming vulnerability, and lyrical brilliance, touched on everything from gender identity, mental health, political resistance, illness, love, heartbreak, and the beauty of simply being alive.

With a cadence that could cut to the bone or lift spirits to the sky, Andrea Gibson didn’t just read poems—they lived them. They turned stages into sacred spaces and audiences into family. For over two decades, Andrea used poetry not just as performance, but as protest, prayer, and presence.

    They often said:

“Poetry is not a luxury. It is a way of survival.”

That survival, for Andrea, was personal. In 2021, they bravely announced a diagnosis of ovarian cancer, which they met with the same fierce vulnerability and transparency that defined their life and art. Through treatments, relapses, and reflection, they continued to write, share, and connect with their fans—never shying away from the truth, and always leading with love.

Andrea published several acclaimed poetry collections, including:

    • Pole Dancing to Gospel Hymns
    • The Madness Vase
    • Take Me With You
    • Lord of the Butterflies (which won the Independent Publisher’s Award for LGBTQ+ Nonfiction)

They also released multiple spoken word albums and sold out venues across the country with performances that defied genre and pierced the soul. Their poems were as likely to leave listeners in tears as in applause—often both.

Beyond the mic, Andrea was a beloved figure in the LGBTQ+ community, a beacon for those seeking understanding and visibility. They were unafraid to speak truth to power, but they did so with the gentle force of someone who had known both great pain and great joy.

    They once wrote:

“You, the one reading this—you are a miracle. This world would not be the same without you.”

It is difficult now to read those words and not feel the magnitude of Andrea’s absence. Their passing is not only a loss to literature, but to a global community of people who found themselves seen and heard through Andrea’s work.

In a poetic twist befitting their spirit, Andrea chose to spend their final hours surrounded by radical love—a wife, exes turned soulmates, family of blood and bond, friends, and faithful dogs. It is said they laughed, cried, and held hands in a final celebration of connection.

The outpouring of grief online has been immense. Fans, friends, and fellow poets have shared stories of how Andrea’s work helped them come out, heal, survive depression, or believe in love again. The hashtag #ThankYouAndreaGibson is filled with quotes from their poems and messages of gratitude.

    Andrea once wrote:

“I do not want to get to the end of my life and find that I just lived the length of it. I want to have lived the width of it as well.”

And they did. Andrea Gibson lived every inch of life—loudly, boldly, beautifully, and with fierce compassion.

They are survived by their wife, Meg, their loving parents, a family of friends and chosen kin, and thousands of fans whose lives they forever changed.

A public celebration of Andrea’s life is being planned, with details to be announced in the coming weeks. In lieu of flowers, the family asks that donations be made to LGBTQ+ youth organizations, cancer research foundations, or local poetry centers—causes Andrea championed with passion.

    May their words echo on.

    May their love endure.

And may we all continue to live as Andrea lived: wide, wild, and unafraid.

    Rest in power, Andrea Gibson.

You were, and always will be, a revolution wrapped in a poem.

  • 22-Year-Old Evandole Lusane Sentenced to 20 Years for Armed Carjacking and Kidnapping

22-Year-Old Evandole Lusane Sentenced to 20 Years for Armed Carjacking and Kidnapping

BOYNTON BEACH, FL — A violent and harrowing carjacking incident that unfolded in January 2024 has come to a close with the sentencing of 22-year-old Evandole Lusane, who was sentenced to 20 years in the Florida Department of Corrections after accepting a plea agreement.

The case stems from a terrifying armed carjacking and kidnapping involving a Lyft driver, who was forced at gunpoint to withdraw money and threatened with death. The ordeal began on the morning of January 11, 2024, after the driver picked up two passengers in Lake Worth, Florida.

Shortly after the ride began, one of the passengers exited the vehicle near East Palm Drive and North Seacrest Boulevard in Boynton Beach. The second individual—later identified as Evandole Lusane—remained in the car. That’s when the situation turned from routine to life-threatening.

According to authorities, Lusane brandished a firearm and forced the driver to comply with a series of dangerous and terrifying demands. He ordered the victim to drive to two separate Bank of America locations, withdrawing a total of approximately $1,000 in cash while pointing the gun at the victim and issuing threats.

The situation escalated further when the pair stopped at a 7-Eleven convenience store, where Lusane made a purchase. Still holding the driver hostage, Lusane then directed the vehicle to the Hypoluxo Scrub Trail in Lantana. There, he shoved the firearm into the driver’s neck, chillingly telling him:

“I know where you live. If you go to the police, I will kill you and your family.”

Fearing for his life, the victim seized an opportunity to escape on foot and contacted the Lantana Police Department. The case was promptly handed over to the Boynton Beach Police Department, who launched an immediate investigation.

    Breakthrough in the Case

Later that evening, Boynton Beach detectives successfully tracked the victim’s vehicle to 3001 N. Seacrest Blvd in West Palm Beach. Lusane was located and arrested near an ATM inside a nearby store. Officers recovered several of the victim’s stolen items, including his cellphone, debit cards, and other personal property.

Surveillance footage confirmed that Lusane used the victim’s debit card at the ATM. When presented with a photo lineup, the victim immediately identified Lusane as the assailant who held him at gunpoint.

    Charges and Sentencing

Lusane was subsequently charged with multiple serious offenses:

    •Carjacking with a firearm

    •Kidnapping

    •Robbery with a firearm

    •Aggravated assault with a firearm

In court, Lusane accepted a plea agreement in exchange for a sentence of 20 years in state prison. The plea ensures that he will serve a significant term for the violent crimes committed, while also sparing the victim from having to relive the trauma through a lengthy trial.

    Community Reaction

The incident sent shockwaves through the local community and raised questions about rideshare safety and passenger screening. While the victim escaped physically unharmed, the emotional toll of the ordeal was significant.

Law enforcement officials praised the bravery of the victim, the swift work of the Boynton Beach detectives, and the cooperation between multiple police departments that led to a quick arrest.

“This was a dangerous and calculated crime,” said a spokesperson for the Boynton Beach Police Department. “Thanks to the courageous actions of the victim and the dedication of our officers, we were able to bring Mr. Lusane to justice and ensure the safety of our community.”

As Evandole Lusane begins his 20-year sentence, the case serves as a reminder of the critical importance of public awareness, vigilance, and the relentless work of law enforcement in pursuing justice for victims of violent crime.

  • Timmothy Hall, Registered Sex Offender, Arrested by JSO on Attempted Kidnapping Warrant

Timmothy Hall, Registered Sex Offender, Arrested by JSO on Attempted Kidnapping Warrant

𝐉𝐚𝐜𝐤𝐬𝐨𝐧𝐯𝐢𝐥𝐥𝐞, 𝐅𝐋 –A man with a disturbing criminal past is back behind bars after 55-year-old Timmothy Hall was arrested by the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO) over the weekend in connection with an attempted child abduction and indecent exposure case out of Daytona Beach.

Hall was identified by the Daytona Beach Police Department as the suspect in a July 11 incident at a local store, where he allegedly exposed himself to a child and attempted to grab the victim by the arm. Thankfully, the child managed to break free, and no physical injuries were reported. Hall fled the scene before authorities arrived.

Following the incident, Daytona Beach detectives developed leads indicating Hall may have fled to Jacksonville. Assistance was requested from JSO and the U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, which includes Jacksonville officers.

On Saturday evening, JSO officers located Hall in the Arlington neighborhood, sitting in a vehicle. With coordinated support from the JSO Aviation Unit and K-9 officers, police conducted a felony takedown, taking Timmothy Hall into custody without incident.

Hall’s criminal history raises serious concern. In 2010, he was arrested in Hillsborough County for lewd or lascivious exhibition involving a minor under the age of 16. At the time, Hall worked as a medical assistant at the Duval County Jail, a position he resigned from following his arrest. He was subsequently classified as a registered sex offender.

Now facing fresh charges tied to this most recent offense—including attempted kidnapping and indecent exposure—Hall remains in custody and is expected to be transferred to Daytona Beach authorities for prosecution.

The Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office commended the collaborative effort that led to Hall’s arrest:

“Thanks to the hard work of our officers and the support from the Daytona Beach Police Department and U.S. Marshals Fugitive Task Force, we were able to remove a dangerous individual from the streets. Timmothy Hall will now face the justice system once again.”

Authorities are encouraging anyone who may have further information about Timmothy Hall or other potential victims to contact their local police or Crime Stoppers. This case serves as a sobering reminder of the importance of community vigilance and swift action in protecting children from predators.

Santa Rosa, CA – Authorities in Santa Rosa have arrested 35-year-old Shaylynne Watson and 54-year-old Beverly Hansel in connection with a deeply troubling case involving the fentanyl exposure of an 11-month-old baby girl. The child, who miraculously survived the incident, was exposed to the deadly opioid while under Watson’s supervision at Hansel’s apartment.

The Santa Rosa Police Department responded to a hospital around 3:40 a.m. on July 14, 2025, after being alerted to a possible drug exposure involving the infant. Investigators later learned that the child had likely been exposed to fentanyl hours earlier—around 7:00 p.m. the night before—while at Hansel’s residence.

According to police, Hansel administered Narcan, the life-saving overdose reversal medication, after the baby began showing signs of distress. However, in a critical lapse of responsibility, neither Hansel nor Watson called 911, and the baby was not transported to the hospital until well after midnight—nearly five hours after the initial exposure.

Following an investigation by Santa Rosa detectives, both women were arrested and face the following charges:

    • Shaylynne Watson: Felony Child Endangerment
    • Beverly Hansel: Felony Child Endangerment and Possession of Drug Paraphernalia

Police say drug paraphernalia was found at Hansel’s residence, suggesting that illegal narcotics were present in close proximity to the child. The precise way in which the infant was exposed remains under investigation, though law enforcement officials describe the circumstances as both dangerous and preventable.

The baby girl, whose name has not been released, is now recovering. Her current medical condition has not been publicly disclosed. Child Protective Services is actively involved and will determine the appropriate steps to ensure the child’s long-term safety.

The arrests of Watson and Hansel have triggered widespread concern across the Santa Rosa community and raised new alarms about the growing threat fentanyl poses to even the youngest and most vulnerable.

“This child was lucky to survive,” said one police spokesperson. “The failure to seek emergency help in a timely manner could have cost her life. It’s an absolute tragedy that could have been prevented.”

Authorities are urging the public to remain alert and to report suspected child neglect or drug activity, especially in homes where children are present. Quick action can save lives.

This case remains an active and ongoing investigation, and anyone with additional information is encouraged to contact the Santa Rosa Police Department.
