Steven Alexander Corfe Obituary – In Loving Memory of a Gentle Soul, Brilliant Mind, and Devoted Heart

It is with immense sorrow and profound love that we announce the passing of Steven Alexander Corfe, who died peacefully at Kensington Hospice in Toronto, surrounded by his beloved wife Johanna and a close circle of family and friends who held him in the highest regard. Though his life ended too soon, Steve leaves behind a legacy of kindness, intellectual passion, and unwavering devotion that will forever echo in the lives of all who were fortunate enough to know him.

Steve was the dearly loved husband and life partner of Johanna O’Brien, with whom he shared a bond rooted in respect, joy, and enduring love. Together, they raised their son, Owen Jagger Corfe, who was not only the light of Steve’s life but also his greatest source of pride and purpose. Every moment Steve spent with Owen—from coaching and camping to sharing sports trivia and life lessons—was filled with tenderness, laughter, and an unmistakable sense of wonder.

Born in Paisley, Scotland, in 1971, Steve immigrated to Canada in 1978 with his family, eventually settling in Barrie and later in Cornwall. His early life was shaped by curiosity, resilience, and a deep appreciation for family. He was the devoted son of Maria Corfe and Richard Corfe (Kelly), and the loving brother to Kareen (Bryan), with whom he shared a lifetime of memories. He also held a special place in the lives of his nieces and nephews—Maya, Emalee, Sarah, Colton, Ronan, and Sydney—with whom he built relationships full of playfulness and guidance.

Steve’s extended family brought him joy and comfort, especially the O’Brien family—James and Susan, Matthew and Kimberley, Andrew and Vanessa—who welcomed him warmly and supported him unfailingly. Family gatherings, shared meals, and summer days at the cottage were sacred to Steve. They weren’t just moments of togetherness—they were affirmations of everything he valued most: connection, laughter, and love.

Academically, Steve was a man of brilliance and humility. After earning a Bachelor of Science in Biology and Chemistry from Brock University, he pursued and completed a Ph.D. in Immunology at the University of Toronto. Driven by a passion for science and human wellness, Steve dedicated his professional life to cancer research—a field where he not only excelled but also made meaningful contributions.

Steve’s career flourished at the University Health Network (UHN), one of Canada’s most prestigious healthcare institutions. As Director of the Research Facilities Department, Steve wasn’t just a respected leader—he was a mentor, a problem solver, and an empathetic colleague. His commitment to advancing medical research was matched by his deep care for the people around him. He approached every challenge with calm confidence and worked tirelessly to create an environment where others could thrive.

But Steve’s life extended far beyond lab coats and boardrooms. He was a man of wide-ranging interests and deep passion. A lover of music, books, travel, and especially sports, Steve brought enthusiasm and insight to every pursuit. He was an accomplished athlete, best remembered as the savvy and agile point guard for the legendary Kurt Rambis TRSL basketball team, and he maintained his athleticism and competitive spirit through hockey, golf, and impassioned viewings of March Madness and other sporting events.

Steve’s greatest joys were rooted in simple pleasures—camping with Owen, talking for hours with friends, playing cards at the cottage, or enjoying a good book with a cup of tea. He was curious about the world, endlessly thoughtful, and a brilliant conversationalist. His humor was dry but warm, his loyalty unwavering, and his presence comforting to all who were lucky enough to know him.

Steve cherished the times spent at Geneva Park, Richard and Kelly’s home, Kareen and Bryan’s cottage, and the Tausy family cottages—all places that became backdrops to countless memories and meaningful connections. These were places where Steve could simply be himself: joyful, reflective, generous, and surrounded by those he loved most.

As the Corfe and O’Brien families grieve the immeasurable loss of Steve, they also celebrate a life lived with intentionality and grace. They ask that, in lieu of flowers, those wishing to honor Steve’s memory consider donating to one of the causes closest to his heart:

    • Owen’s Educational Trust Fund
    • Princess Margaret Hospital Foundation, in gratitude for the compassionate care Steve received
    • Road Hockey to Conquer Cancer, a cause that perfectly combined his love for sport with his life’s work in cancer research

Steven Alexander Corfe will forever be remembered not only as a brilliant scientist and dedicated professional but more importantly as a loving husband, devoted father, beloved son and brother, and a kind-hearted friend. He lived a life defined by generosity, intellect, and quiet strength. Though his physical presence is gone, the values he lived by—curiosity, empathy, faith in people, and deep, unwavering love—will live on in the hearts of those he touched.

In honoring Steve’s life, we are reminded that the measure of a person lies not in the years they lived, but in the love they gave, the lives they improved, and the legacy they leave behind. And in all of those, Steve surpassed measure.

Rest in peace, Steve. Your light endures.

Katie Langston Harlin Obituary – A Life Full of Grace, Love, and Faith

With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, the community of Birmingham, Alabama, mourns the untimely passing of Katie Langston Harlin—a beloved wife, devoted mother, cherished daughter, treasured friend, and faithful follower of Christ. Katie’s sudden departure has left an unfillable void in the lives of all who had the honor to know her, yet her spirit continues to shine through the countless lives she so deeply touched.

Katie passed away recently, and while the circumstances surrounding her passing have not been publicly shared, her memory is already being honored in waves of heartfelt tributes from friends, family, and colleagues whose lives were forever changed by her presence. She was more than a wife to Jason Harlin and a mother to Whitley Kate and Adeline Jane—she was a source of strength, compassion, and unwavering love, grounded in her deep Christian faith.

Born and raised in Hoover, Alabama, Katie was the embodiment of Southern grace and warmth. From a young age, she displayed a generous spirit and an intuitive ability to connect with others on a deep and meaningful level. She carried these gifts throughout her life, touching hearts in every season—whether in the classrooms and fields of her childhood, the workplace, or her church community.

Katie built a distinguished professional life as a Senior Account Executive at Three Arbor Insurance, Inc. Her colleagues remember her not only as a driven and knowledgeable professional but as a woman of integrity and kindness—someone who brought care and sincerity to every conversation, every meeting, every project. She was respected, admired, and above all, deeply loved by those she worked with.

But Katie’s greatest joy and proudest accomplishments were found at home. Her marriage to Jason was a reflection of deep friendship, shared faith, and enduring love. Together, they built a home centered on their love for God and one another. Her daughters, Whitley Kate and Adeline Jane, were the light of her life. She poured herself into motherhood with boundless energy and grace—celebrating their triumphs, soothing their sorrows, and building family traditions rich with love and laughter.

Katie had a way of making everyone feel like they mattered. She was often described as someone who “lit up the room” with her radiant smile, warm hugs, and genuine interest in others. Whether she was volunteering at church, cheering on her daughters at their games, or simply catching up with a friend over coffee, Katie offered her presence fully, making others feel heard, loved, and valued.

In a moving tribute, family friend Terry Whitfield recalled Katie’s impact on her own daughter, sharing:

“These folks became family to me and my girls when we moved to Auburn. Katie Langston Harlin became Sarah’s best friend when our girls were in coach pitch. I’m thankful that our paths crossed in 2021.”

This sentiment echoes the thoughts of so many who knew Katie—not just as a passing acquaintance, but as someone who made them feel like family.

Katie’s life was anchored in her faith. Her devotion to Jesus Christ wasn’t just a belief she held—it was the way she lived. She embodied the teachings of Christ through her compassion, her kindness, and her willingness to serve others selflessly. Her faith gave her strength, and in turn, she gave that strength to others.

As the Harlin family navigates this season of unimaginable grief, they have asked for privacy as they mourn the loss of a woman whose presence was the heart of their home. Friends and loved ones are wrapping Jason, Whitley Kate, and Adeline Jane in prayer, love, and unwavering support—reminding them that they do not walk this path alone.

Plans are underway for memorial services that will reflect Katie’s vibrant spirit and steadfast faith. In those gatherings, there will be tears and sorrow, but also stories full of warmth and laughter—memories that paint the portrait of a life well lived and a soul deeply loved.

Katie Langston Harlin leaves behind her beloved husband Jason, daughters Whitley Kate and Adeline Jane, her parents, siblings, extended family, church community, coworkers, and a wide circle of friends who will never forget her. Her life, though heartbreakingly short, was overflowing with meaning, purpose, and grace.

As we grieve her loss, we also give thanks for her life. Katie’s memory will live on in every life she touched, every act of kindness done in her name, and every moment her story inspires someone to love more deeply, live more fully, and walk more faithfully.

May the Lord comfort those who mourn. May Katie’s soul rest in eternal peace. And may her memory forever be a blessing.

  • Bloomington Woman Sentenced to 95 Years in Prison Following Child Sexual Assault and Pornography Investigation

Bloomington Woman Sentenced to 95 Years in Prison Following Child Sexual Assault and Pornography Investigation

BLOOMINGTON, IL – A Bloomington woman has been sentenced to 95 years in the Illinois Department of Corrections following a harrowing investigation into child sexual assault and the production of child pornography. On Tuesday, July 15, 2025, Sarah Troutwine (also known as Sarah Howard) received the decades-long sentence after pleading guilty to multiple charges related to a 2024 investigation that uncovered disturbing crimes against children and animals.

The case began on August 29, 2024, when the Bloomington Police Department’s Cyber Crimes Unit launched an investigation after receiving a tip from a technology company. The company had submitted a report to the National Center for Missing and Exploited Children (NCMEC) about uploaded and shared videos suspected to be child sexual abuse material.

Working closely with NCMEC, detectives from the BPD Criminal Investigations Division executed a series of search warrants that led to the recovery of evidence implicating Troutwine in multiple sexual offenses. Among the evidence was video footage of Troutwine sexually assaulting a child, engaging in sexual acts with an animal, and possessing additional material categorized as child pornography.

After the search warrants were executed and charges were finalized, Troutwine was arrested by members of the BPD Street Crimes Unit without incident.

In May 2025, Troutwine entered a guilty plea to two counts of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child and one count of Child Pornography Production. The severity of the charges, the volume of evidence, and the nature of the crimes prompted a decisive ruling by the court.

She was sentenced to a total of 95 years in prison:

    • 40 years for Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault of a Child (must serve 85%)
    • 40 years for a second count of Predatory Criminal Sexual Assault (must serve 85%)
    • 15 years for Child Pornography Production (must serve 50%)

The sentences are to be served consecutively, meaning Troutwine will not be eligible for parole until the year 2100.

    Law Enforcement and Community Reaction

In a statement following the sentencing, Bloomington Police Chief Jamal Simington praised the work of the BPD and the broader law enforcement network:

“The conduct this criminal investigation unveiled was substantial. The judge’s sentencing sends an impactful message to our community that this type of dangerous behavior will not be tolerated,” said Chief Simington. “From the initial investigation through the prosecutorial process, I commend the diligent efforts of all who made our city safer. Although the work of our officers is hard, laborious, and stressful, we seek to bring justice to victims and protect those who are not able to protect themselves from harm.”

The Bloomington Police Department is a proactive member of the Illinois Internet Crimes Against Children (ICAC) Task Force, a coalition dedicated to combating child exploitation on digital platforms. The department regularly receives CyberTips from NCMEC and works in close collaboration with other local, state, and federal agencies to pursue leads and hold perpetrators accountable.

    Public Awareness and Support

To share crime tips locally and remain anonymous, residents may contact the Crime & Intelligence Analysis Unit (CIAU) at 309-434-2963 or email CIAU@cityblm.org. Tips can also be sent by texting the number 847411, typing “BPDTIPS”, followed by a space and the tip information.

Please note: The tip line is not monitored 24/7. The CIAU office is staffed from 8:00 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., Monday through Friday.

    A Strong Message of Justice

The outcome of this case stands as a powerful reminder that crimes against children will be pursued to the fullest extent of the law. The Bloomington Police Department has reiterated its ongoing commitment to identifying, investigating, and prosecuting such cases to protect the most vulnerable members of the community.

As the city of Bloomington moves forward, this landmark sentencing sends a clear message: child exploitation will not go unanswered, and justice will be served.

  • Former Duval County Music Teacher Arrested for Child Molestation in Multiple Cases

Former Duval County Music Teacher Arrested for Child Molestation in Multiple Cases

Jacksonville, FL — A former music teacher with ties to several Duval County schools has been arrested on serious charges of child molestation, according to the Jacksonville Sheriff’s Office (JSO). The arrest of 42-year-old Gregg Gafford stems from multiple allegations of inappropriate sexual conduct involving underage students—accusations that span over a decade.

JSO’s Special Assault Unit Detectives confirmed that Gafford was taken into custody on a warrant for Lewd and Lascivious Molestation, a charge that carries significant legal consequences under Florida law. Authorities say the arrest is connected to two separate cases, both of which involve students from schools where Gafford was employed.

    Incidents at Two Schools

The most recent allegation occurred in 2023, when Gafford was working at St. Matthew’s Catholic School. According to investigators, a child reported that Gafford groped them during an after-school club event. The disturbing claim prompted an immediate response from school administrators and law enforcement, leading to an internal review and subsequent criminal investigation.

While the school reportedly took swift action to remove Gafford from student contact, further scrutiny into his past teaching history led detectives to uncover a second, earlier allegation dating back to 2011.

In that case, another former student came forward in 2024—now an adult—accusing Gafford of sexual abuse that took place while he was a music teacher at Normandy Village Elementary School. The student alleges that inappropriate contact occurred during school hours and involved repeated, unwanted physical touching. The emotional weight of the experience, the student says, prevented them from speaking out until recently.

    A Pattern of Concern

The allegations suggest a disturbing pattern of abuse spanning several years and different educational institutions. Detectives are now working to determine whether there may be additional victims who have yet to come forward. Given Gafford’s history of employment at multiple schools and youth programs, authorities are urging parents, students, and staff who may have information to contact the JSO Special Assault Unit at (904) 630-0500 or submit anonymous tips via Crime Stoppers at 1-866-845-TIPS.

    School and Community Response

The arrest has sent shockwaves through the Jacksonville education community. Parents and educators have expressed anger, heartbreak, and concern over the fact that Gafford continued working with children for so many years despite the alleged earlier misconduct.

A spokesperson from St. Matthew’s Catholic School released a statement acknowledging the arrest and emphasizing their commitment to student safety:

“The wellbeing of our students is always our top priority. Upon receiving the allegation, we immediately reported the incident to law enforcement and removed the individual from campus. We are fully cooperating with investigators and offering counseling support to affected students and families.”

The Duval County School District has yet to release a public statement regarding Gafford’s time at Normandy Village Elementary, but sources say internal personnel records are being reviewed.

    Legal Proceedings

Gafford is currently being held without bond and is expected to make his first court appearance in the coming days. Prosecutors have not ruled out the possibility of additional charges, pending the outcome of the ongoing investigation.

    A Call for Accountability

The news of Gregg Gafford’s arrest is another reminder of the importance of vigilance and accountability in school environments. While the legal process will determine his guilt or innocence, these serious allegations have reignited calls for stronger safeguards, comprehensive background checks, and improved reporting systems in schools—public and private alike.

As the investigation continues, the focus remains on the victims—both known and unknown—whose courage in coming forward may prevent further harm and ensure justice is served.

This is a developing story. Further updates will be provided as more information becomes available.

  • Deputies Respond to Accidental Shooting Involving 4-Year-Old in South County

Deputies Respond to Accidental Shooting Involving 4-Year-Old in South County

Location: Lynnwood, Washington ~ A tragic accident early Tuesday morning has sent shockwaves through the South County community after a 4-year-old child gained access to an unsecured firearm and unintentionally shot his mother inside their Lynnwood home.

At approximately 8:01 a.m., deputies from the South County Sheriff’s Office were dispatched to the 3100 block of 164th Street SW following a 911 call reporting an assault with a weapon. Upon arrival, they found a 42-year-old woman suffering from a gunshot wound to her upper left arm. Emergency medical personnel quickly transported her to Harborview Medical Center, where she is currently being treated for serious but non-life-threatening injuries.

Authorities confirmed that the shooting was accidental and that the four-year-old son of the victim had retrieved a loaded handgun from inside the residence. The child also sustained minor injuries in the incident, although the nature of those injuries has not been disclosed.

During the course of their investigation, deputies determined that the child had obtained the weapon from his father, a 44-year-old man, who was asleep on the couch at the time of the shooting. Multiple unsecured firearms were observed throughout the home, raising serious concerns about firearm safety and legal compliance.

As a result, the father was taken into custody and booked into the Snohomish County Jail on charges of:

    • Reckless Endangerment
    • Unlawful Storage of a Firearm

The couple’s two children, aged 4 and 9, have since been released to the care of family members, and Child Protective Services has been notified to conduct a follow-up welfare assessment.

    Community Impact and Ongoing Concerns

This incident has reignited ongoing conversations surrounding firearm safety, responsible gun ownership, and child access prevention laws in Washington state and beyond. Officials emphasize that this tragic event serves as a painful reminder of the devastating consequences that can result from improper firearm storage, especially in homes with young children.

“While we are grateful this mother survived and that the child’s injuries were not more severe, this is a stark and heartbreaking example of what can happen when weapons are not secured,” said a spokesperson from the South County Sheriff’s Office. “This could have easily resulted in the death of a child, a parent, or both.”

    A Call to Action

Local authorities and child safety advocates are urging all gun owners to secure firearms in locked safes or with trigger locks, especially in homes where minors are present. In Washington State, failure to safely store firearms may result in criminal charges if a minor gains access and causes harm.

Free gun locks and educational resources are often available through local law enforcement agencies and public health organizations. The Sheriff’s Office encourages residents to take advantage of these programs to prevent similar tragedies from occurring.

    Next Steps

The investigation into the shooting is ongoing. No further details about the family or the specific type of firearm involved have been released at this time. Prosecutors are expected to review the case and may consider additional charges as the facts are fully assessed.

Further updates will be provided by the Snohomish County Sheriff’s Office as new information becomes available.

  • Our Deepest Condolences to Buck Brannaman and Family on the Loss of Their Beloved Horses

Our Deepest Condolences to Buck Brannaman and Family on the Loss of Their Beloved Horses

With heavy hearts, we extend our deepest condolences to Buck Brannaman, his family, and all those affected by the recent and devastating loss of their cherished horses. In what has already been a trying year, this tragedy brings profound sorrow to a family whose lives are deeply intertwined with the animals they love, train, and dedicate themselves to.

For those who may not yet have heard, Buck’s daughter, Reata Brannaman, shared the following heartbreaking message:

“As if 2020 hasn’t been hard enough, our family suffered a terrible loss of 3 of our horses on the road with dad, as well as one of Robbie’s. Sad and terrible day for everyone involved. Dad and Robbie are uninjured—aside from broken hearts. We ask that you allow us privacy and to regain our footing from this tragic ordeal on our own. We ask that during the following weeks, allow Buck the closure by not asking for details, allow him to teach and move forward. As you all know, our horses are our lives and we owe everything to them. We are beyond blessed that we have 3 amazing horses that will follow in the footsteps of their brothers that came before and left us all too soon. Dad will be continuing on with his clinics starting this weekend with Boozy, Tito, and Shooter. All we ask is for everyone to say a prayer so God knows that those three horses waiting at heaven’s gate are ready for him to swing a leg over and enjoy as much as we did.”

The Brannaman name is synonymous with horsemanship, respect, and healing, and this loss is especially painful for those who understand the bond between a horse and a true horseman. To Buck, Reata, Robbie, and the extended Brannaman family, horses are not just companions or tools of a trade—they are family, partners in purpose, and reflections of the spirit and discipline that have shaped their lives.

To lose these noble animals so suddenly is not just a logistical or professional hardship—it is a deep emotional wound, one that takes time, space, and grace to begin to heal. We honor the strength and courage of Buck and his loved ones in choosing to continue their journey forward, carrying the memories of the horses they lost with reverence.

Let us all take a moment to reflect on the lives of those incredible animals—whose loyalty, beauty, and contributions can never be replaced. May they now run freely beyond this world, unburdened and at peace, waiting for their rider to join them again in spirit.

To the Brannaman family: please know that you are not alone in your sorrow. The extended community of horse lovers, friends, students, and admirers stands beside you, holding space for your grief, your healing, and your hope. We send love, strength, and quiet prayers during this incredibly difficult time.

May Boozy, Tito, and Shooter carry your legacy forward with dignity and strength—and may the memory of those you’ve lost remain alive in every clinic, every pasture, and every heart you touch.

    With heartfelt sympathy,

    More Than Just Financial Support

Even if you can’t give financially, your voice, your kindness, and your shared support matter. Please consider sharing this message so we can reach others who may want to help. Every bit of encouragement, every act of compassion, is a reminder to this family that they are not alone.

To those who have already stepped up with meals, gift cards, flowers, baskets for the kids, donations, and heartfelt messages—thank you. Your love has helped carry them through the darkest days. Catherine and her children will never forget the kindness and grace you’ve shown them.

Now, more than ever, this family needs us. Let’s show Catherine, Easton, and Oakleigh that they are surrounded by a village of people ready to lift them up—to be the hands that carry them forward, the hearts that hold space for their sorrow, and the hope that guides them toward brighter days.

Thank you for being part of their healing.

    With deepest gratitude,

(Friend, Advocate, and Forever in Their Corner)
