In Loving Memory of Riley Thoren (2003–2025): A Shining Light Gone Too Soon

LAKE WAWASEE, IN — July 12, 2025 — With hearts weighed down by profound grief, the communities of Syracuse and Carmel, Indiana mourn the tragic passing of Riley Thoren, a radiant 22-year-old whose life was heartbreakingly cut short in a drowning accident at Lake Wawasee on Saturday.

What was meant to be a summer day filled with laughter and sunshine turned into a moment of deep sorrow as word spread of Riley’s untimely death. The loss reverberated quickly through family, friends, and countless others who were touched by their vibrant presence. It is a pain that words can scarcely capture, yet it is in these words that we try to honor the beautiful life Riley lived — a life marked by joy, adventure, and compassion.

A Life Filled with Spirit and Light

Born in 2003, Riley was a proud graduate of Carmel High School, where they were known for their kindness, wit, and an infectious energy that could lift an entire room. Whether on campus, out exploring nature, or surrounded by friends, Riley had a way of making people feel welcomed, seen, and celebrated.

Described by those closest as adventurous, empathetic, and endlessly curious, Riley’s passions ranged from hiking and music to creative writing and volunteering. They often sought out the path less traveled, eager to experience the world with open eyes and an even more open heart.

“Riley didn’t just live life — they embraced it,” a friend shared. “There was always a story to tell, a song to sing, a cause to support. Riley had a fire in them — a warmth that stayed with you.”

    A Community in Mourning

In both Carmel and Syracuse, candlelight vigils and memorial gatherings are being planned to remember the light Riley brought into so many lives. Social media is now flooded with heartfelt tributes, photographs, and cherished memories — each one a testament to the remarkable way Riley made others feel loved and understood.

Riley’s family, while devastated, has expressed deep appreciation for the overwhelming outpouring of support. They ask that Riley be remembered not for the tragedy of their passing, but for the joy they radiated, the people they lifted up, and the love they gave so freely.

“Riley was our sunshine,” their family wrote in a statement. “They were a listener, a dreamer, a constant source of laughter and strength. The grief we feel is heavy, but so is the gratitude — for 22 beautiful years.”

    Honoring Riley’s Legacy

Riley is survived by loving parents, siblings, extended family, and a vast circle of friends who will carry their memory forward. Plans are underway for a celebration of life ceremony that will reflect Riley’s joyful and free spirit, complete with their favorite music, art, and the people who loved them most.

  • Remembering Christina “Kristy” Combs, 32 — A Life Cut Short in the Richmond Road Baptist Church Tragedy

Remembering Christina “Kristy” Combs, 32 — A Life Cut Short in the Richmond Road Baptist Church Tragedy

LEXINGTON, KY – July 13, 2025 — With broken hearts, the Lexington community mourns the loss of Christina “Kristy” Combs, a 32-year-old woman whose life was taken in a horrific act of violence that unfolded Sunday at Richmond Road Baptist Church. Kristy was one of two victims killed in the church shooting, which was part of a tragic and deadly chain of events that also left several others injured, including a Kentucky State Trooper.

The suspect, now identified as Guy House, 49, of Lexington, carried out two separate but connected attacks — one beginning with a traffic stop on Terminal Drive, near Blue Grass Airport, and ending at the historic Richmond Road Baptist Church, where Kristy and 72-year-old Beverly Gumm were fatally shot. House was later killed by law enforcement at the scene.

A Peaceful Morning Turned into Horror

Authorities say that around 11:30 a.m., a Kentucky State Trooper attempted a routine traffic stop on Terminal Drive. During the encounter, the suspect, Guy House, opened fire, striking the trooper and fleeing the scene. House then reportedly carjacked a nearby vehicle and made his way across town to Richmond Road Baptist Church, where he had personal ties to the congregation.

Once there, he opened fire again, this time targeting individuals on church property. Kristy Combs and Beverly Gumm were both killed in the shooting. Two men were also injured, and remain hospitalized. The motive for the attack has not been officially determined, though police confirmed that House had some connection to the church or its members.

The entire ordeal spanned multiple locations and has left the city shaken, sparking grief, outrage, and an outpouring of support for the victims.

    Honoring Kristy Combs

To those who knew her, Kristy Combs was more than just a name in a headline. She was a daughter, a sister, a friend, and a cherished member of her church community. A lifelong Lexington resident, Kristy was known for her kind heart, warm personality, and unshakable faith. She was active in church ministries, often volunteering her time to support local families in need and mentoring young girls in the congregation.

Friends describe Kristy as someone who radiated light — a woman who always offered help before it was asked for, who remembered birthdays with hand-written cards, and who had a way of making everyone feel seen and valued. She worked locally as a medical assistant and had dreams of one day becoming a nurse, hoping to make a difference in the lives of others.

“Kristy was the kind of person you hoped to sit next to at church,” one fellow congregant shared. “She listened without judgment, prayed with sincerity, and made even the hardest days feel a little lighter.”

    Community in Mourning

Sunday’s tragedy has left the congregation of Richmond Road Baptist Church devastated. The sanctuary, a place long known for its warmth and welcome, is now the scene of unspeakable violence. The church has announced that it will hold a vigil and memorial service in honor of Kristy and Beverly Gumm in the coming days.

Mayor Linda Gorton addressed the community Sunday night, calling for strength and unity in the face of overwhelming grief.

“Lexington has suffered a terrible loss today. We stand with the families of the victims, and we will not let this act of evil define us. Kristy and Beverly’s memories will be honored through our compassion and through our commitment to one another.”

    Ongoing Investigation

The Kentucky State Police, Lexington Police Department, and Fayette County Sheriff’s Office are continuing their investigation into the shootings. Law enforcement officials confirmed that the officers who shot and killed the suspect have been placed on administrative leave in accordance with standard protocol.

Authorities are still working to uncover what led Guy House to carry out such a violent and calculated act. His relationship with the church and the victims remains a key point of investigation.

Holding On to Light in the Darkness

As the city tries to come to terms with the shock and sorrow of this tragedy, one thing remains clear: Christina “Kristy” Combs will not be forgotten. Her life, though tragically short, was one of service, joy, and unwavering faith. In the words of her pastor, “Kristy was love in motion — gentle in heart, bold in kindness, and faithful until the very end.”

Her family has asked for privacy during this time of mourning, but expressed their gratitude for the overwhelming support they’ve received. They plan to establish a memorial fund in Kristy’s name to support violence prevention efforts and church community programs.

In honoring her, we commit to standing against violence, to remembering the beauty of those we’ve lost, and to lifting one another up — just as Kristy did every single day.

Funeral arrangements will be announced in the coming days. Anyone wishing to support the Combs family is encouraged to contact Richmond Road Baptist Church or follow official memorial announcements on the church’s website.

  • Major Fire Emergency Declared at Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility in Fall River

Major Fire Emergency Declared at Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility in Fall River

FALL RIVER, MA — July 13, 2025 — A devastating fire tore through the Gabriel House Assisted Living Facility on Sunday evening, triggering a large-scale emergency response and leaving multiple residents trapped, injured, and fighting for their lives. The blaze, which erupted at 261 Oliver Street, was quickly elevated to a General Alarm Fire and designated a Mass Casualty Incident (MCI) due to the sheer magnitude of the situation.

According to reports from local emergency services and witnesses on the scene, several occupants sustained severe burn injuries, while others required immediate rescue from smoke-filled hallways and flame-engulfed rooms. The full scope of injuries and potential fatalities is still being determined as first responders continue their search and recovery operations into the night.

    A Community Mobilized

The incident began in the early evening hours, when 911 dispatchers received reports of visible flames and smoke billowing from the multi-story assisted living facility. First-arriving firefighters were met with intense fire conditions, heavy smoke, and cries for help from residents still inside. The severity of the blaze prompted the Fall River Fire Department to recall all off-duty personnel in a rare city-wide mobilization.

“This was a worst-case scenario — an active fire in a facility with dozens of elderly and disabled residents, many of whom could not evacuate on their own,” said a fire official at the scene. “We’re throwing everything we have at it.”

Fire crews battled the fast-moving flames while conducting life-saving rescues, pulling residents to safety from upper floors using ladders and carrying those unable to walk out of danger. Paramedics immediately began treating victims on-site, many of whom were suffering from burns, smoke inhalation, or trauma-related injuries.

Hospitals on Alert, EMS Surge Deployed

With a high volume of victims, an EMS task force was activated to coordinate medical care and patient transport. Area hospitals, including Charlton Memorial Hospital and St. Anne’s, were placed on emergency alert to receive the influx of casualties.

Dozens of ambulances were seen lined up outside the building, with firefighters working in tandem with EMTs to triage victims and stabilize critical patients. The Red Cross and other emergency aid organizations have also been mobilized to assist displaced residents and their families.

    Uncertainty and Ongoing Rescue Efforts

As of late Sunday evening, emergency crews remain on scene, continuing to suppress remaining pockets of fire and search for any remaining occupants. Officials have not yet confirmed the number of injuries or potential fatalities, but warned that the situation remains fluid and that the building sustained catastrophic damage.

Dozens of family members and concerned loved ones have gathered outside the facility, anxiously awaiting news of their relatives. Fall River Mayor Paul Coogan has been briefed on the emergency and is expected to release a statement once more information is confirmed.

    Investigation to Follow

While the immediate focus remains on rescue and medical response, fire officials have already indicated that an investigation into the cause of the fire will begin as soon as conditions are safe. Representatives from the State Fire Marshal’s Office are en route, and early reports suggest the fire may have originated in a residential wing, though that has not been officially confirmed.

In the meantime, city officials are working to secure emergency housing for surviving residents and provide mental health support for those affected by the traumatic event.

A City in Mourning, A Community Rallies

What was supposed to be an ordinary Sunday evening in Fall River has become a night of horror and heartbreak, especially for the families of the elderly residents who called Gabriel House home. Many in the community have already begun organizing vigils and donation drives in anticipation of what is likely to be a long and painful recovery process.

This remains a developing story. The public is urged to avoid the area around Oliver Street and allow emergency personnel the space needed to conduct rescue and recovery operations.

Anyone seeking information about loved ones at Gabriel House is encouraged to contact the Fall River Emergency Hotline (number to be announced) as the city establishes a reunification center and support services.

More updates will be provided as information becomes available.

  • UPDATE: Lexington, Kentucky Church Shooting — Suspect Identified, Two Dead, Several Injured

UPDATE: Lexington, Kentucky Church Shooting — Suspect Identified, Two Dead, Several Injured

Lexington, KY — Authorities have identified the suspect in Sunday’s devastating shooting at a Lexington church as Guy E. House, a resident of Lexington. According to Fayette County Coroner Gary Ginn, House is now deceased following a violent series of events that began Sunday morning and culminated in a deadly confrontation at Richmond Road Baptist Church.

What began as a routine traffic stop escalated into a tragedy that has left a community reeling, two women dead, and several others wounded.

    Timeline of Events

The incident began around 11:30 a.m. Sunday, when a Kentucky State Police trooper initiated a traffic stop on Terminal Drive, not far from Blue Grass Airport. During the stop, the suspect—later identified as House—opened fire on the trooper, striking him. Bystanders on the scene rushed to help the injured officer while the suspect fled the area, triggering a massive law enforcement response.

Shortly after fleeing, House carjacked a vehicle, further endangering civilians as he attempted to evade capture. Authorities say House then made his way to Richmond Road Baptist Church, where he opened fire once again—this time on church property.

    Tragedy at the Church

At the church, two women—one 72 years old, the other 32—were killed in the gunfire. Two men were also injured, though their conditions have not been publicly released at this time. The identities of the victims have not yet been released pending notification of their families.

Law enforcement officials stated that House had a known connection to the church, though details surrounding his relationship to the congregation, the victims, or the motive for the attack remain under investigation.

As officers arrived at the church in response to the shooting, House was confronted by law enforcement and ultimately shot and killed at the scene. Multiple officers discharged their weapons during the encounter and, as per protocol, have since been placed on administrative assignment while the incident is reviewed.

    Investigation and Community Impact

The Kentucky State Police, in coordination with Lexington Police, Fayette County Sheriff’s Office, and federal agencies, are conducting a comprehensive investigation into the sequence of events and motive behind the attack. Officials have confirmed that House’s identity was withheld temporarily until family notifications could be completed, but he has now been publicly named.

At this time, authorities have not disclosed a clear motive for the attack or explained what may have triggered the sudden outburst of violence. Investigators are looking into House’s background, mental health history, and possible ties to the victims or the church.

Lexington Police Chief and local clergy held a brief press conference Sunday evening, expressing grief and support for the victims while thanking the public for their patience and cooperation during a chaotic and heartbreaking day.

“This is a day of mourning for our city,” said one official. “We’re grieving alongside the families who lost loved ones and praying for the recovery of those injured. Churches should be sanctuaries—places of peace—and today, that peace was shattered.”

Next Steps and Support for Victims

Crisis counselors and grief support services are being offered to the congregation and community members, many of whom are struggling to come to terms with the trauma. A vigil is expected to be held later this week to honor the lives lost.

The injured trooper remains hospitalized, and officials say he is in stable condition thanks to the quick actions of nearby Good Samaritans and responding EMS personnel.

Law enforcement has asked that anyone with video footage, photographs, or first-hand information about the shooting or the suspect’s movements Sunday morning contact Kentucky State Police or Lexington Police Department immediately.

This senseless act of violence has left a deep scar on the Lexington community, and while the immediate threat has passed, the process of healing—both emotional and spiritual—has only just begun.

Further updates will be provided as more information is made available.

  • With Heavy Hearts: Remembering Kellyanne Lytal

With Heavy Hearts: Remembering Kellyanne Lytal

With heavy hearts and profound sorrow, we share the devastating news that Kellyanne Lytal, one of the earliest reported missing campers over the July 4th holiday, has been found deceased. The discovery, confirmed late Sunday by search and rescue officials, marks a heartbreaking end to the nearly week-long search effort that had gripped loved ones and drawn in community members, volunteers, and emergency personnel from across the region.

Kellyanne, just 23 years old, was last seen at a remote riverside campsite she had visited with a small group of friends for the holiday weekend. According to those close to her, she had looked forward to the getaway — a time to disconnect, recharge, and embrace the outdoors that she loved so dearly. Described as adventurous, compassionate, and deeply connected to nature, Kellyanne was known for her warm spirit and an infectious laugh that could brighten even the darkest trail.

When she was first reported missing after failing to return from a short solo hike near the campsite, concern quickly grew. Her absence triggered an intensive search operation led by local and state authorities, including canine units, drones, dive teams, and volunteers combing rugged terrain and waterways. Despite days of searching through challenging conditions — including heavy rain, muddy trails, and swift river currents — hopes remained high that she would be found safe.

Those hopes were tragically dashed when search teams located her body in a wooded ravine several miles downstream from the camp. Preliminary findings indicate that Kellyanne may have slipped while hiking along a narrow trail near a bluff edge, leading to a fatal fall. Authorities have stated that there is no evidence of foul play, though a full investigation and autopsy are underway to provide clarity and closure to the grieving family.

Kellyanne’s parents, through a statement released by the family, expressed their anguish but also deep gratitude:

“Our hearts are shattered by this unimaginable loss. Kellyanne was a beautiful soul — brave, loving, and full of life. We are grateful for the outpouring of love and support, and especially to the volunteers and rescue teams who never gave up. Though this is not the ending we prayed for, we take comfort in knowing she is now at peace among the stars she so loved to watch.”

The Lytal family is now making preparations for a memorial service to celebrate Kellyanne’s life — a life that, though tragically cut short, left an indelible impact on all who knew her. Friends describe her as a loyal confidante, a free spirit who journaled daily, loved Fleetwood Mac and Van Gogh, and had dreams of becoming a park ranger. She was known to leave behind little handwritten notes of encouragement to strangers and once spent an entire summer volunteering to clear invasive species from national parks.

Her passing has sent waves of grief through the communities she touched — from her hometown to the online hiking forums and environmental groups she actively contributed to. Vigils have already begun in parks and trailheads across the state, where candles and flowers now sit beneath trees she once walked beneath.

As we mourn her loss, we also honor her light — a reminder of the fragile beauty of life, and the importance of connection, purpose, and compassion.

To those who continue to hike, explore, and cherish the natural world, Kellyanne’s legacy is one of courage and wonder. May her memory forever echo in the rustling leaves, the songs of birds, and the quiet strength of the wilderness she so deeply loved.

The Lytal family asks for privacy in the coming days but encourages those who wish to honor Kellyanne to consider donations in her name to the National Park Foundation or local Search and Rescue organizations.

For now, we hold her in our hearts — lost too soon, but never forgotten.

  • Tragedy Off the Coast of Little Compton: Brothers Valdir and Aldino Centeio Recovered After Fishing Accident

Tragedy Off the Coast of Little Compton: Brothers Valdir and Aldino Centeio Recovered After Fishing Accident

LITTLE COMPTON, RI – A heartbreaking weekend has ended in sorrow as authorities confirm the recovery of two fishermen who went missing off the coast of Little Compton on Saturday morning. The victims have been identified by family members as 31-year-old Valdir Centeio and 27-year-old Aldino Centeio, brothers from Stoughton, Massachusetts.

According to officials, the brothers were last seen fishing near the rocks by Warren’s Point Beach Club, a popular yet rugged shoreline where powerful currents and waves can present real danger. At some point during the morning, the brothers entered the water—possibly swept in by a wave or attempting to retrieve gear—and never resurfaced.

A third person at the scene attempted a brave rescue but was ultimately unable to save the brothers. That individual was not injured but was visibly shaken and cooperated with emergency responders.

    Extensive Multi-Agency Search

In the immediate aftermath of the incident, an extensive and coordinated search was launched involving:

    • The U.S. Coast Guard
    • Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management (DEM)
    • Marine units and dive teams from Middletown, Tiverton, Newport, and Little Compton

Searchers combed both land and sea, with the Coast Guard deploying side-scan sonar to detect any signs of movement or remains beneath the surface. However, by 3:00 p.m. Saturday afternoon, the Coast Guard suspended their search, transferring investigative and recovery responsibilities to local authorities.

Later, both brothers’ bodies were recovered near the area where they were last seen, confirming the worst fears of their loved ones and the many who had been holding out hope for a miracle.

    🕊️ Remembering Valdir and Aldino

Valdir and Aldino Centeio were more than just avid fishermen—they were devoted sons, brothers, and friends, known for their strong family bonds, work ethic, and love of the outdoors. Originally from Stoughton, Massachusetts, the brothers had made a tradition of taking fishing trips together—cherishing the time shared on the water.

“They were inseparable,” said one family member. “If you saw one, you’d see the other. They were best friends as well as brothers.”

Their sudden and tragic loss has left the Centeio family shattered and a community mourning the passing of two young men whose lives were cut far too short.

    💬A Community in Grief

As word of the tragedy spread, support poured in from the South Coast and Massachusetts communities, where the Centeios were well known. Friends, neighbors, and even strangers have been expressing condolences and sharing stories of the brothers’ kindness and humility.

Local churches and community leaders have begun organizing vigils and support efforts to help the family in the days ahead.

    How to Help

The family is expected to share details regarding memorial services and potential fundraising efforts to assist with burial costs and emotional support. For now, they are asking for privacy as they grieve the loss of their sons and brothers.

We extend our deepest sympathies to the Centeio family and all who knew and loved Valdir and Aldino. May they be remembered not just for the tragedy that took their lives, but for the love, joy, and brotherhood they brought into the world.

Rest in peace, Valdir and Aldino. May the seas you loved now cradle you in eternal peace.

Antwan’s sudden death is not just a loss for his family, but a deep wound in a neighborhood he helped nurture and protect.

    What Happened: The Shooting Details

They found five individuals shot—Kevin Lewis and Antwan Hogans were pronounced dead at the scene, while three other victims were transported to local hospitals.

Thanks to witness statements, surveillance footage, and swift police action, 24-year-old Malik Darnell Hayes was identified as the primary suspect. Authorities confirmed Hayes was apprehended without further incident and remains in custody at the Milwaukee County Jail.
