On the evening of Sunday, May 25, 2025, a serious boating accident occurred in Hampton Bays, New York, resulting in multiple injuries and the arrest of the boat’s captain, 28-year-old Edward Hillkewicz of Mastic Beach.

At approximately 8:50 p.m., a 33-foot Grady-White center console boat crashed into the Shinnecock Canal jetty on the Great Peconic Bay side and came to rest on the beach at Meschutt Beach County Park. The crash resulted in injuries to several passengers onboard. An adult female passenger sustained serious injuries and was airlifted to Stony Brook Hospital by the Suffolk County Police Department. A video captured by bystanders shows the boat crashing into the jetty and spinning 180 degrees before coming to rest on the beach.
