Fallen Hero: Baldwin Park Police Officer Samuel Riveros Killed in Line of Duty During Deadly Shootout

BALDWIN PARK, Calif. — A community is in mourning as Baldwin Park Police Officer Samuel “Sam” Riveros, a nine-year veteran of the department, was tragically killed in the line of duty on Saturday night during a violent exchange of gunfire in a quiet residential neighborhood.

The incident unfolded at approximately 7:21 p.m. in the 4200 block of Filhurst Avenue, where officers responded to reports of a man actively firing a rifle. According to officials, what began as a call for help quickly turned into a deadly ambush when the responding officers came under immediate gunfire.

“When officers arrived, they were met by gunfire,” Los Angeles County Sheriff Robert Luna reported during a press conference held late Saturday evening. “Despite their training and efforts to contain the threat, the suspect fired upon them with lethal intent.”

Officer Sam Riveros and a second officer were both struck during the gunfight. Emergency medical teams from the Los Angeles County Fire Department responded swiftly to the scene. One officer was transported by ambulance, while Officer Riveros was airlifted to USC Medical Center with life-threatening injuries. Despite all efforts by doctors and emergency personnel, Officer Riveros succumbed to his wounds.

The second officer remains hospitalized and is reported to be in stable condition. He is being supported by his family and fellow officers as he begins his recovery process.

Law enforcement returned fire during the incident, striking the armed suspect. The shooter was taken into custody at the scene and transported to a local hospital, where he is being treated and is currently listed in stable condition. Authorities have not yet released the suspect’s identity or the motive behind the shooting, pending further investigation.

A Life of Service and Dedication

Officer Riveros was more than just a law enforcement officer — he was a friend, a protector, and a cherished member of the Baldwin Park Police Department. Over his nine-year career, he built a reputation for his commitment to community policing, compassion for others, and bravery under pressure.

“Officer Riveros died a hero, doing what he loved — protecting and serving the people of Baldwin Park,” said Police Chief Ernest Bilodeau in a statement Sunday morning. “He was a remarkable officer whose courage and sacrifice will never be forgotten.”

The department has expressed deep condolences to Officer Riveros’s family, friends, and colleagues. Plans are underway to honor his legacy with a full police memorial in the coming days.

Community Grieves Together

Flags have been lowered to half-staff across Baldwin Park and throughout the region as the community comes to terms with the devastating loss. Memorials and vigils are expected to be held in the coming days, and members of the public are encouraged to leave messages of support or flowers at a makeshift memorial forming outside the Baldwin Park Police Department headquarters.

Local residents have also taken to social media to express their sorrow and admiration for Officer Riveros’s service. Many remember him as a familiar and friendly face on patrol, always willing to lend a helping hand or a listening ear.

As law enforcement agencies across California and beyond extend their support, the Baldwin Park Police Department remains united in grief — and in resolve.

“We will carry on with Officer Riveros’s strength and integrity guiding us,” Chief Bilodeau added. “We will not forget his sacrifice.”
