The Alliance For Change (AFC) mourns the loss of one of its most esteemed and devoted leaders, Valerie Garrido-Lowe, who passed away early this morning following a sudden heart attack. Her death marks the end of a remarkable journey of service, leadership, and advocacy that has left an indelible impact on the political and social fabric of Guyana.
Valerie Garrido-Lowe was a founding member and pillar of the Alliance For Change. Her involvement with the party spanned its inception and development, and she remained a constant and unwavering presence through its many phases of growth. Her political career and her service to Guyana were defined by passion, courage, and an unshakeable sense of purpose.
From 2015 to 2020, she served as the Minister within the Ministry of Indigenous Peoples’ Affairs, a role in which she made transformative contributions to the lives of Guyana’s Amerindian communities. Minister Garrido-Lowe dedicated herself to amplifying the voices of Indigenous peoples, advocating for their rights, and spearheading initiatives aimed at improving education, health care, infrastructure, and sustainable development in hinterland regions.
Her leadership was marked by deep empathy and a tireless work ethic. She traveled extensively to remote communities, listening to their concerns and working hand-in-hand with village leaders to craft policies that addressed real needs. Whether it was through championing land rights, supporting women and youth empowerment programs, or ensuring cultural preservation, Valerie Garrido-Lowe’s legacy is one of tangible progress and heartfelt service.
As a trailblazing woman in politics, she inspired many—especially young women—to rise above challenges and become agents of change in their own right. She was admired for her eloquence, her calm determination, and her integrity. Those who knew her remember not just the public figure, but the warmth, humility, and compassion that she brought to every interaction.
The AFC remembers Valerie Garrido-Lowe not only as a colleague but as a dear friend and mentor. Her passing is a deep and personal loss to all of us who had the privilege of working with her and witnessing her dedication firsthand. Her life’s work will continue to influence and uplift generations to come.
To her children, extended family, friends, and the countless individuals whose lives she touched, we extend our deepest condolences. May you find comfort in knowing that her legacy lives on in the communities she served and the hearts of those who loved her.
We ask that the nation join us in honoring the memory of a true servant of the people. The Alliance For Change will share additional information regarding memorial services and tributes in the coming days.
May Minister Valerie Garrido-Lowe’s soul rest in eternal peace.
