Meridian Township Police Investigate Meridian Mall Shooting – Press Release Update: Suspect Arraigned

MERIDIAN TOWNSHIP, MI – The Meridian Township Police Department has released an update regarding the shooting incident that occurred at the Meridian Mall on Friday, May 30, 2025. At approximately 1:25 p.m., officers were dispatched to the mall’s parking lot, specifically in the area near Dick’s Sporting Goods, following multiple 911 calls reporting gunfire.

Upon arrival, law enforcement officers discovered that two individuals had sustained gunshot wounds during the incident. Emergency medical personnel responded quickly, and the victims were transported to a nearby hospital for treatment. The current condition of the victims has not been disclosed due to privacy considerations, but police have confirmed that both individuals survived the initial injuries.

According to preliminary investigations, an altercation is believed to have preceded the shooting. All involved parties fled the scene before officers arrived, leading to an intensive investigation involving surveillance footage, witness interviews, and collaboration with other local and state law enforcement agencies.

The investigation swiftly led to the identification of a suspect. After compiling sufficient evidence and establishing probable cause, officers arrested the individual believed to be responsible for the shooting. The suspect, whose identity is being withheld pending further proceedings, was taken into custody without incident.

On the morning of Saturday, May 31, 2025, the suspect was formally arraigned in 55th District Court on multiple felony charges, including:

  • Two counts of Assault with Intent to Murder

  • Felony Firearm

  • Carrying a Concealed Weapon

  • Discharging a Firearm in a Public Place

  • Possession of a Firearm by a Felon

The judge presiding over the case set bond at $500,000 cash/surety, citing the severity of the charges and the risk to public safety. The suspect is currently being held at the Ingham County Jail pending a preliminary examination scheduled for later this month.

“This was a frightening incident that occurred in a very public space, and we understand the concern and distress it caused for our residents and visitors,” said Chief of Police Ken Plaga. “Thanks to the quick work of our officers and the cooperation of the public, we were able to apprehend the suspect and begin the process of bringing justice to the victims.”

The Meridian Township Police Department has increased patrols around the Meridian Mall and surrounding areas in response to the incident, aiming to reassure the public and deter further violence. They are also urging anyone who may have witnessed the incident, or who has additional information—including cell phone video—to contact the department at (517) 853-4800 or submit anonymous tips through Crime Stoppers.

As this is an ongoing investigation, further details may be released as they become available. The police department continues to work closely with the Ingham County Prosecutor’s Office and other agencies to ensure a thorough and transparent process.
