  • Tragic Explosion at LASD Special Enforcement Bureau Facility Claims At Least 3 Lives

Tragic Explosion at LASD Special Enforcement Bureau Facility Claims At Least 3 Lives

EAST LOS ANGELES, CA — A devastating explosion early this morning has rocked the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department Special Enforcement Bureau (SEB) facility in East Los Angeles, leaving at least three people dead and prompting a sweeping investigation into what officials are calling a “catastrophic incident.”

The explosion occurred shortly before 7:30 a.m. at or near the Biscailuz Center Training Academy, a highly secured compound used by LASD for tactical training, bomb squad operations, and other specialized law enforcement activities. Authorities have not yet released the identities or roles of those killed, and it remains unclear whether they were deputies, bomb squad technicians, civilian employees, or contractors. The facility is not open to the public.

    A Routine Morning Turned Tragic

Witnesses in the vicinity of the training academy reported hearing a loud boom that shook nearby buildings and was followed by thick smoke billowing from the SEB compound. Emergency responders, including multiple fire engines, hazardous materials teams, and bomb technicians, rushed to the scene within minutes.

Initial reports suggest that the explosion may have involved members of the LASD Bomb Squad, who were potentially handling or disposing of explosive materials at the time. However, officials have not confirmed the exact cause or nature of the blast.

    LASD Responds

In a brief statement this morning, the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department acknowledged the tragic loss of life and expressed deep sorrow as they worked to secure the area and begin the process of investigation.

“We are heartbroken to confirm the loss of life in what appears to be a tragic and unforeseen incident at our Special Enforcement Bureau facility,” an LASD spokesperson said. “Our immediate focus is on ensuring the safety of all remaining personnel, securing the scene, and notifying the families of those involved.”

The Sheriff’s Department added that they are cooperating with federal authorities and explosive ordnance disposal experts to determine what caused the explosion and whether any protocols or safety systems may have failed.

A Facility Designed for Precision and Safety

The Biscailuz Center, part of LASD’s Special Enforcement Bureau compound, is known as a high-security training and operations center used by some of the county’s most elite law enforcement units. This includes the Special Enforcement Bureau, the Bomb Squad, tactical response teams, and other specialized divisions.

Given the highly technical and often hazardous work carried out on-site—including the storage, testing, and disarming of explosive materials—strict safety procedures are in place. Today’s tragedy will likely trigger a comprehensive review of all operational and safety protocols.

    Unanswered Questions and Growing Concern

As of Thursday afternoon, the identities of the deceased have not been released, pending notification of next of kin. The Los Angeles County Medical Examiner-Coroner is assisting in the investigation, along with the FBI, ATF, and California State Fire Marshal’s Office.

Public concern is mounting, with residents and officials alike calling for transparency and a full accounting of how such a deadly explosion could occur at one of the region’s most controlled and specialized law enforcement environments.

“This is deeply disturbing,” said one East L.A. community leader. “These are facilities that are supposed to be among the safest, most secure operations in the country. Our hearts go out to the families of those who lost their lives, and we expect answers.”

A Somber Day for Law Enforcement

The law enforcement community across Southern California and beyond is reeling from the loss. Tributes and messages of solidarity have already begun to pour in from departments and agencies across the country.

“This is a sobering reminder of the risks our bomb technicians and tactical officers take every single day,” said a statement from the National Tactical Officers Association. “We mourn alongside our brothers and sisters at LASD.”

    What Happens Next

As investigators begin the meticulous process of piecing together what happened, all training and operations at the Biscailuz Center have been suspended. It is not yet clear how long the facility will remain closed, or whether additional hazards may be present on the grounds.

The Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department is expected to hold a press conference in the coming hours or days as more information becomes available.

As the community mourns and first responders work tirelessly to understand this tragic event, the names and stories of the fallen will soon be honored. For now, East Los Angeles grieves the loss of life and prays for strength, healing, and clarity in the days ahead.

Tragic Discovery in Elkhart: Remembering Anthony Null, 50, as Police Investigate Death

ELKHART, IN — The city of Elkhart is mourning the unexpected and tragic loss of Anthony Null, a 50-year-old local resident whose body was recovered from the St. Joseph River earlier this week. The Elkhart Police Department confirmed his identity on Thursday, marking a somber moment for the community and raising pressing questions about the circumstances surrounding his untimely death.

Authorities were first alerted to the situation when a passerby reported spotting a body in the water near the shoreline. Emergency responders from the Elkhart Police Department, along with dive teams and members of the Elkhart County Homicide Unit, swiftly arrived on the scene. After carefully retrieving the remains from the river, the individual was later identified as Anthony Null, a longtime Elkhart resident remembered for his friendly demeanor and hard-working spirit.

    Ongoing Investigation

The circumstances of Anthony’s death remain unclear, and officials are actively investigating to determine the events that led to his tragic end. At this time, investigators have not publicly stated whether foul play is suspected, but the Elkhart County Homicide Unit is assisting with the case—standard protocol for deaths involving uncertain or potentially suspicious circumstances.

“We understand the public wants answers, and so do we,” said a spokesperson for the Elkhart Police Department. “This is an active and sensitive investigation. We ask for patience and respect for the family as we work to determine what happened.”

Officials are urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual near the St. Joseph River, particularly in the hours or days prior to the discovery, to contact law enforcement. Tipsters can remain anonymous, and any piece of information—no matter how small—could be valuable in piecing together the timeline leading up to Anthony’s death.

    A Community in Mourning

As word of the tragedy has spread, friends, family, and neighbors have expressed their sorrow and disbelief. Anthony was described by those who knew him as a gentle soul with a generous heart, someone who would lend a hand without hesitation and who always had a kind word for others.

“He was one of those people you could count on,” said a friend who had known Anthony for over a decade. “Hardworking, funny, and down-to-earth. He didn’t deserve this, and it just breaks my heart.”

Anthony had deep roots in Elkhart and was known throughout the community. Whether it was a familiar face at the local grocery store, a regular at the corner diner, or someone who’d worked shoulder-to-shoulder in manufacturing and construction jobs, he left a mark on those who crossed his path.

Family members are devastated by the news and have asked for privacy as they process this unimaginable loss. Plans for a memorial service are expected to be announced soon, and a growing number of community members have expressed interest in honoring Anthony’s memory in a public vigil by the riverbank where his body was found.

    Seeking Answers, Honoring a Life

In the face of uncertainty and grief, one thing is clear: Anthony Null mattered. His life had meaning, his presence brought comfort to those around him, and his death has created a ripple of sadness through the city he called home.

As the investigation continues, Elkhart residents are asked to remain vigilant and cooperative. Anyone with information is encouraged to contact the Elkhart Police Department tip line at (574) 295-7070, or submit anonymous tips through local crime reporting services.

The community now stands in unity—grieving a life lost too soon and demanding clarity and justice as authorities work to uncover the truth.

Rest in peace, Anthony. You are remembered, you are missed, and you will not be forgotten.

  • Heartbreaking Death at CMCF: Remembering Marcus Mallett, 36, Amid Urgent Calls for Prison Healthcare Reform

Heartbreaking Death at CMCF: Remembering Marcus Mallett, 36, Amid Urgent Calls for Prison Healthcare Reform

JULY 17, 2025 — PEARL, MISSISSIPPI – A deeply sorrowful loss has struck the Central Mississippi Correctional Facility (CMCF) and reverberated throughout the broader Mississippi community: Marcus Mallett, a 36-year-old inmate, has passed away following complications related to chronic kidney disease. His death, confirmed today, has sparked grief and raised fresh concerns about the standard of medical care available to individuals in the custody of the Mississippi Department of Corrections (MDOC).

Marcus’s passing is not only a devastating moment for his family and friends, but also a stark and painful reminder of the human toll of chronic illness when met with inadequate support in correctional settings. He had reportedly battled kidney disease for an extended period while incarcerated, requiring specialized and consistent medical attention that many say is difficult to come by within the state prison system.

    A Life Lost Too Soon

Though the details surrounding his treatment and final days have not yet been made public, what is known is this: Marcus Mallett was more than an inmate—he was a son, a friend, and a human being deserving of care and dignity. At only 36 years old, his death is a tragedy that cuts to the heart of a growing conversation about how we treat the most vulnerable behind bars.

Family members and advocates describe Marcus as a soft-spoken, introspective man who had dreams of rebuilding his life. He was known for his quiet strength and the love he held for those closest to him. Even as he faced daily health challenges, he held onto hope for a second chance.

His death has cast a long shadow on a system that continues to face intense scrutiny over its handling of inmates with serious medical conditions. Chronic illnesses like kidney disease require ongoing management—dialysis, medications, dietary regulation, and close monitoring—all of which can be extremely difficult to access reliably within correctional environments.

The Broader Issue: Healthcare in Mississippi Prisons

Marcus’s death is not an isolated incident. Mississippi’s prison system has long been criticized for its underfunded and overburdened healthcare infrastructure. Reports from watchdog groups, human rights organizations, and families have highlighted delays in treatment, poor access to specialists, and limited staffing among medical personnel.

Advocates argue that Marcus’s death underscores a systemic failure that puts lives at risk daily. “This should never have happened,” said a local prison reform advocate. “No one should die in prison because they can’t access basic, life-sustaining treatment. This is a human rights issue.”

His story echoes the cries of many families who have lost loved ones under similar circumstances—individuals who entered the system with manageable medical conditions and left only in death.

    Calls for Accountability and Change

In response to Marcus Mallett’s passing, community leaders and legal advocates are renewing calls for comprehensive reform within the MDOC system. Demands include third-party oversight of inmate healthcare services, increased transparency, and the immediate expansion of medical resources for those suffering from chronic conditions.

“This is about more than one tragedy,” said a representative from the Southern Coalition for Justice. “This is about a system that too often allows vulnerable people to suffer in silence. Marcus deserved better. Every person in our custody does.”

Several groups have called for an independent investigation into the circumstances surrounding Marcus’s death, citing a need to determine whether his treatment—or lack thereof—contributed directly to the outcome. The MDOC has yet to issue a full statement regarding the incident.

    Remembering Marcus

While the headlines may focus on the institution, it’s important not to forget the man at the center of it all. Those who knew Marcus remember a life full of untapped potential. He was described as quiet, kind, and deeply reflective. In conversations with those closest to him, he often spoke of healing, of faith, and of the desire to be reunited with loved ones on the outside.

To his family, this loss is not just political or institutional—it is deeply personal. A light has gone out far too soon, and their grief is raw and profound.

    In Closing

We extend our deepest condolences to Marcus Mallett’s family, friends, and loved ones as they navigate this heartbreaking moment. May he be remembered with the love and dignity every human being deserves, and may his death not be in vain—but rather a call to conscience for real and lasting change.

As the community mourns, we hold space for sorrow, for outrage, and for hope—that someday, justice in this state will mean not only accountability for actions, but also compassion for those who are still here, still fighting to live.

Rest in peace, Marcus. You will not be forgotten.

The Jacksonville Police Department is actively investigating the incident, which unfolded on the evening of Thursday, July 17, and is urging the public to come forward with any information that may help bring justice in this case.

The Incident: Shooting at Dupree Park

At approximately 6:32 p.m., police were dispatched to Dupree Park, located at 1700 South Redmond Road, after reports of gunfire near the park’s playground area. Dupree Park, often frequented by families and children, was thrown into chaos by the sound of gunshots, sending shockwaves through the peaceful summer evening.

While en route to the scene, responding officers came across a black passenger vehicle that had crashed at the intersection of West Main Street and T.P. White Drive — less than two miles from the park. Upon further investigation, officers discovered that the vehicle’s driver had suffered a gunshot wound related to the earlier park shooting.

The victim, identified Friday as De’Andre Gooden, was immediately transported to a nearby hospital. Tragically, despite medical efforts, he succumbed to his injuries.

Investigation Ongoing: No Arrests, No Known Motive

As of Friday afternoon, no suspects have been identified or taken into custody. Police are working diligently to gather evidence, interview witnesses, and canvass the area for surveillance footage or other leads.

Authorities have not released any information about the shooter’s identity or a possible motive behind the attack. It remains unclear whether the shooting was targeted or random. Investigators have not confirmed whether De’Andre was alone at the time or if others were involved in the altercation.

    Public Appeal for Information

The Jacksonville Police Department’s Criminal Investigations Division is leading the inquiry and is urging anyone who may have seen or heard anything unusual near Dupree Park or along West Main Street around the time of the shooting to step forward.

“We are committed to finding out who is responsible for this senseless act of violence,” said a department spokesperson. “But we can’t do it alone. We need the eyes and ears of the community.”

Anyone with information is asked to contact the Criminal Investigations Division at 501-982-3191. Callers can remain anonymous.

Community Reaction: Shock, Sorrow, and Demands for Justice

“It hurts even more because it happened at a place where families bring their kids to play,” said a resident who lives near the park. “That park is supposed to be safe. Now, it’s a crime scene.”

Local faith leaders and community organizers have already begun planning a vigil in honor of De’Andre, calling for peace, accountability, and healing in the wake of another act of gun violence that has claimed a young life.

What’s Next: A Commitment to Justice

As the investigation continues, police promise transparency and diligence. Updates will be released to the public as more information becomes available. Meanwhile, the Jacksonville Police Department remains focused on tracking down the individual or individuals responsible.

De’Andre Gooden’s family is now preparing for a funeral that should never have been necessary — one more young life cut short by violence. The community joins them in grief and resolve, hoping answers and justice come soon.

If you know anything, no matter how small, please come forward. De’Andre’s life mattered — and someone out there knows the truth.

Eddie wasn’t just known in Oak Park—he was loved. To know him was to be inspired by him. With an infectious smile, a kind word for everyone, and a spirit that could lift even the heaviest hearts, Eddie moved through the world with a grace and presence that left an imprint on everyone he met.

From a young age, Eddie showed an extraordinary resilience and drive. He was an exceptional student, known for his determination and academic commitment. He never let any obstacle define him or limit his dreams. Every goal he set for himself, he pursued with pride, purpose, and an unwavering belief in his ability to make a difference.

But Eddie’s life was about so much more than academics. He became a powerful advocate for the Down syndrome community, using his voice, story, and strength to inspire change and promote inclusion. He shattered misconceptions and broke down barriers—not by force, but by simply being himself: authentic, confident, and endlessly compassionate.

Eddie’s advocacy didn’t go unnoticed. He was admired by many—teachers, classmates, community leaders, and families near and far—for the way he uplifted others and stood proudly for what he believed in. He was a role model, not only for individuals with Down syndrome, but for anyone who’s ever been told they couldn’t or shouldn’t. Eddie proved that limitations only exist when we stop believing in possibility.

He loved deeply and lived intentionally. Whether cheering on his favorite sports teams, helping out at school functions, speaking at community events, or simply sharing time with friends and family, Eddie brought his full self into every moment. He made people feel seen and valued. He had a gift for turning strangers into friends and for reminding people of the good that still exists in the world.

To his family, Eddie was a source of endless joy and pride. To his friends, he was a steady light. To his community, he was a quiet hero who made everything feel a little brighter.

Oak Park is mourning the loss of a truly special soul. Memorials and tributes have begun to appear across the community—photos, handwritten notes, and flowers left at familiar places where Eddie once walked, laughed, and brought happiness. It is a testament to how many hearts he touched.

Though we are heartbroken, we are also incredibly grateful. Grateful for the years we had with Eddie. Grateful for the lessons he taught us—about courage, love, determination, and the power of being exactly who you are.

Eddie Sitzman’s legacy will live on in every life he changed, every person he encouraged, and every moment we choose kindness over judgment, hope over despair, inclusion over division.

We send our deepest condolences to his family and loved ones. In the days ahead, may we honor Eddie’s memory by living with the same love, boldness, and kindness that he showed us every day.

Rest in peace, Eddie. You made this world better—and your light will never fade.
