PAGE COUNTY, Va. (WHSV) – A devastating early morning crash on Tuesday has left the Page County community in mourning, as Virginia State Police confirm the death of 42-year-old Jennifer N. Atwood, a resident of Luray, Virginia. Atwood was tragically killed in a single-vehicle accident on Kite Hollow Road shortly before 1 a.m.
According to authorities, the crash occurred at approximately 12:52 a.m. on Tuesday. Preliminary findings from the Virginia State Police indicate that a Mitsubishi Mirage sedan, driven by Jennifer Atwood, was traveling in reverse with the driver’s side door open. The vehicle suddenly veered off the left side of the narrow, rural road and descended down a steep embankment before colliding with a tree.
Atwood was pronounced dead at the scene. Police noted that she was not wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash, which may have contributed to the fatal outcome. The impact of the collision was described by responders as severe, with the vehicle sustaining extensive damage upon striking the tree at the bottom of the slope.
The cause of the accident remains under active investigation. It is still unclear why the vehicle was moving in reverse or what circumstances led Jennifer Atwood to be driving in such a manner at that hour. Authorities are looking into a variety of potential factors, including mechanical malfunction, driver impairment, a possible medical emergency, or other contributing elements.
