Uhrichsville, OH — With heavy hearts, we announce the sudden passing of John Robert Kernich, age 39, of Uhrichsville, who left us far too soon on May 12, 2025, at the Cleveland Clinic – Main Campus in Cleveland, Ohio. A man of strong character, deep loyalty, and boundless compassion, John’s departure leaves a profound void in the lives of all who knew and loved him.
Born in Columbus, Ohio, John was the cherished son of Donald T. (Belinda) Kernich of Grove City and Mary Ellen “Tia” (Hubert) Kovach of Uhrichsville. His journey through life was one marked by passion, dedication, and a relentless pursuit of growth and connection.
A proud graduate of Whetstone High School, John’s love for sports took root early, blossoming into a lifelong devotion that shaped many of his relationships and pursuits. He carried this athletic spirit into Marietta College, and was especially proud to be among the inaugural football players at Ohio Dominican University in Columbus—an achievement he often shared with pride. At the time of his passing, John was continuing his educational journey, studying Electrical Engineering at Kent State University – Tuscarawas Campus, proving his unwavering commitment to personal development and his future.
John lived life with a zest that was impossible to miss. He was a diehard Ohio State Football fan, and game days were sacred—filled with excitement, bold predictions, and unwavering loyalty to the Buckeyes. His love of sports also extended to basketball and countless other games where he found joy, connection, and a sense of community.
One of John’s favorite destinations was Las Vegas, where he traveled frequently with friends. These trips were filled with laughter, lasting memories, and the kind of friendships that only grew stronger over time. To those who knew him best, John was more than just fun—he was dependable, loyal, and full of heart.
He was the kind of man who would drop everything to help a friend, show up unannounced just to make someone laugh, or stay up late to catch up with a family member on FaceTime. His role as “the fun and loving uncle” was one he embraced with joy and pride, never missing a moment to bond with his nieces Emery and Ada, who brought endless light to his world.
John’s love for animals also shined through his bond with his loyal K-9 companions, Jasper and Bruno, who were truly part of his family.
He is survived by his devoted parents and loving siblings, Matthew (Carrie) Kernich of Durham, North Carolina, and Michael Simrak of Colorado Springs, Colorado, along with Allison and Brett Kimmet. Also surviving are his extended family who meant the world to him: his aunts and uncles Dr. James Hubert, Kevin (Nancy) Hubert, Mary Beth Hubert, Aileen Hubert, Vanessa (Tim) Skidmore, and Roberta (Steve) McCarthy, and a host of cousins including Ryan, Daniel, and Jessica Kernich, Jason and Ethan McCarthy, Marie Skidmore, Thomas, Nicolas, James, and Andrew Hubert, Steven Hubert, and Joey Olson.
John now joins in eternal rest his grandparents Robert and Rita Kernich, Jane and James Hubert, his aunt Cathie Kernich, uncle Patrick Hubert, and his cousin Edward Kernich.
In his final and most selfless act, John gave the gift of life through organ donation—ensuring that even in death, his legacy of generosity and compassion lives on.
In accordance with his wishes, cremation care was entrusted to the Linn-Hert-Geib Funeral Home & Crematory in New Philadelphia. A Celebration of Life will be held on Saturday, July 12, 2025, at 6 PM, at the Whetstone Park of Roses Shelter House in Columbus, Ohio, where all who loved John are invited to gather and honor his memory.
In lieu of flowers, the family kindly requests that memorial contributions be made in John’s name to the Franklin County Dog Shelter, 4340 Tamarack Blvd., Columbus, OH 43229—an organization close to his heart.
