Wilmington authorities have identified the victim involved in a fatal motorcycle accident that occurred Friday afternoon on Route 9 near Haystack Road. The victim, 61-year-old David S. Percey of Cambridge, New York, succumbed to his injuries following a severe collision that left the community shaken.
According to a news release issued by the Wilmington Police Department, Mr. Percey was operating a 2015 BMW R1200 GS motorcycle when the incident occurred. While traveling eastbound on Route 9, he unexpectedly left the travel lane and collided with a guardrail. The impact caused multiple traumatic injuries, which ultimately proved fatal.
Emergency responders from Deerfield Valley Rescue quickly arrived at the scene and transported Mr. Percey to Southwestern Vermont Medical Center. Despite the efforts of medical staff, he was pronounced dead shortly after arrival due to the severity of his injuries.
The Wilmington Police Department is continuing its investigation into the circumstances surrounding the crash. At this time, there is no indication that other vehicles were involved, and no further details about the cause of the accident have been released.
The loss of Mr. Percey has deeply saddened those who knew him, as well as the larger community. Described by acquaintances as an avid motorcyclist with a passion for adventure, his sudden passing is a harsh reminder of the inherent risks associated with motorcycle travel, especially on rural highways.
Officials urge all motorists and motorcyclists to exercise extreme caution on the roads, particularly in areas with guardrails and other roadside hazards. The importance of wearing appropriate safety gear and maintaining attentive control of vehicles cannot be overstated.
As the investigation proceeds, the Wilmington Police Department asks anyone who may have witnessed the accident or has additional information to come forward to assist in piecing together the events leading up to the crash.
The community extends its deepest condolences to the family and friends of David S. Percey during this difficult time.
